By "brain only," I assume it's meant that battery, LCD, CF module, lens mount, etc. are not included.

Does this mean that it's actually cheaper to buy the fixed lens Scarlet (considering what it comes with -- battery, CF module, 2.8" LCD, etc.) than to buy the "brain only," even if one already has a lens? The bare minimum of stuff to get the brain working would cost over $2000 more.

The Fixed model is supposed to be a cheaper kit, but with the trade-off that the lens cannot be removed. If you want faster primes (which RED plans to offer), you'll need the interchangeable model. The models serve two different purposes.

The interchangable Scarlet actually has a CF card slot on the brain. So you would not need to purchase that part.

By brain only they mean brain only. Cf module(the double one that stacks to the rear like other modules) or the single-slot side CF module are accessories you can buy for your own $$$.

Look at the picture of the Cinema Scarlet one more time you will see the single CF card slot on the brain of the camera. And yes the dual CF card module is an accessory.

Cedric, if I am not mistaken, that thread points out the change in the side CF module design, there is no mention there (or anywhere for that matter), of the Side CF module being an included part of the brain. The fact that the module has been designed to fit so snugly to the brain, gives it a single unit appearance (IMHO... which could be totally wrong)

As of the Nov. 30th announcement, it was still included in the individual module pricing breakdown, which would be unnecessary if it was part of the brain.

I am looking at the pricing breakdown right now. There is no mention of the side cf module at all. Therefore the logical conclusion is that the side CF slot is a part of the camera brain.

The only CF module listed with a price is the Dual CF Rear Module-$950

EDIT: I am sitting here with egg on my face. Plain as day Side CF Module - $500:emote_whack:

So, it is correct that to get the brain working, one would have to spend over $2000 (because nothing is included)?

If this is true, it seems counter-intuitive. If you get all the exact same stuff, the lens-less system costs more. When has a camera body alone ever cost more than the "with lens" kit? (I know the analogy doesn't fit exactly, but you get my meaning.)

My thoughts:

The fixed kit is the gateway drug for those less economically fortunate. It is priced to sell in volume.
The interchangeable is aimed at a different target.

Plus I feel it is folly to analyze the specs versus cost till the actual release and offer of a product at a price point.

Either way:

Fixed kit: $4,750
Brain and lens - ?? (under my assumed pricing for the batteries , $2,300)
Side CF - $500
2.8" lcd - $900
redmote - $550
battery and charger - ??? (they are still working our how to get this in the kit. For now lets look at the values of the rear module plus two batteries. $1,250 lets assume that the batteries cost as mush as the module and just divide by three to get $416. Lets round up to $500 for the value of the charger.)

interchangeable - $5,200
brain - $2,750
Side CF - $500
2.8" lcd - $900
redmote - $550
battery and charger - ??? (calling it $500)

Not a huge difference.

You're forgetting the lenses.

There's also the possibility that RED will be offering a starter kit to sell in volume: Battery, small LCD, Basic IO and CF Card at a discount. Since all scarlets and epics would be able to use the starter kit they could sell it as a separate package.

Nope didn't forget anything. In this comparison the lens is the extra, the add on. It wasn't an "up and shoot" comparison just a fixed kit compared to the interchangeable + the modules al a carte.

I think the pricing seems to be incredibly comptetitve (when placed against what you could assume would be the competitors if the camera was released right now), even when you've broken down the 'brain only' option to exactly what you need to show up on the first day of a shoot.
I tend to think, however, that the two options are pitched to two very differnt types of customer. I'd argue that the interchangable lens option is geared towards those who want to make films, spend time (and yes, money) over shots and set ups to build a narrative hinged on the quality of different lenses.
The fixed lens - although still that distinctive Scarlet 'flavour' could probably be pitched to more moderate operators for whom glass flexibility isn't a demand... Dare I say its the perfect item for ENG or corporate work.
Thats not to say fixed isn't worse or better.. and my opinion is that when getting the 'brain only' the investment of all the additions (Side CF, 2.8" lcd ,redmote etc) will pay off should you decide to upgrade the brain at a later date..

But then what do I know :P I'm going to make a short film on a LG Viewty!

Well shouldn't you also be able to use the accessories from the fixed kit (minus the lens) on any other Scarlet brain? Like the Redmote, the LCD, and the CF slot?

Yes.

EDIT: I am unsure of the CF slot though.

The price difference previously was the fixed brain was $500 more than the cinema brain, reflecting the added cost of the fixed lens. I assume the difference would remain about the same with a $250 increase in prices for the brains without accessories. The fixed brain does not need some features of the cinema brain, like the back focus adjustments, and lens mounts, and the savings from elimininating those would be part of the cost of the fixed lens. I expect the package savings come from discounting the add ons, and not from the fixed brain being cheaper. That lens is not cheap. With the same price increase as the cinema version, the fixed brain only should be $3250.00
There are at least two different battery systems being developed: Small batteries that fit the side handle for which they have shown a rendered add on module that will hold three small batteries in slots, and the large battery module, the one that they have announced pricing for that holds two large batteries on opposite sides.
Who knows how all this will shake out by the release date.

Originally, I was going to get the 2/3 interchangeable, but my only reason was the faster lenses. But after some consideration I decided to go with the 2/3 fixed. I think the advantages of having a fully integrated lens and all the bells and whistles that come along with that outweigh the faster lenses for me. Nothing I shoot with the 2/3 fixed is going to be on anything other than a television so I'm not concerned about the difference in perceived image quality.

I think the quality of the fixed lens will likely be superb and since it is optimally matched to the sensor, will produce superior results compared to many aftermarket lenses, especially older used ones. Definitely a good deal.
