Show a 20 year old filmstudent who is about to make her first shortfilm the 5D MarkII footage REVERIE. Tell her the 5D MarkIIB just came out with less compression, timecode and manual audio controls. Ask her what camera she would like to buy with her 2870 bucks she just got from selling her car. By today I think you would be surprised!
A DSLR-killer is better and/or cheaper. But hey, you get a “slightly” smaller sensor, a fixed lens or no canon mount but therefore many more pixels and everything raw. That is better, stupid. –
It is not. Better is the same and on top. And a killer is cheaper, too.
However do not get me wrong! Red is a truly amazing and apperantly listening company. Otherwise I would not have mentioned the above for sure. So keep it up and let her grab the knife a night ... :detective2:

Consider:

1. you're basing your argument on a fictional 20 year old
b. since she's fictional, anyone can make her do anything they want to prove their point
three. what was your point again?

:bleh:

Maybe she'll be back to explain what all of that meant...

Btw., 5D MarkII still not shipping in any volumes.

Simply this opinion or notion or whatever sh**t is now like a "Obsolescence Obsolete"...

However ...

"But the least expensive RED "brain" with a cinema sensor is the Scarlet S35, and it's $7,000. That's without LCD, buttons, or lens. Although it's the cheapset option with a big chip, it shoots 5K, which is way more resolution than I care about.

The Scarlet FF35, which has a sensor the same size as the Canon 5D and 5D MarkII, is $12,000 for just the brain. It shoots 6K, adding more overhead to my workflow that won't wind up on the screen.

Worse still, these boxes only overcrank up to 30 fps, whereas the $2,500 2/3" Scarlet can run up to 120 fps at a very usable 3K.

I agree.

...And then she did a handstand while juggling chainsaws with her feet.

Well -

Well -

Well - her name is Maria. And as a matter of fact she is already 21. Also in all honesty she did not get the 2870 bucks from selling her car but from her grandfather who has always trusted her intuition. However Maria will soon pay the killer - and "she" remains black not red by today. :spidy:

maybe she wants to shoot the movie at 24p. But she can't, because that camera doesn't support 24fps, so she has to shoot 30fps. She also has a couple of shots that need to be shot at 48fps, or higher.

Then tell her, she'll have to rent a another camera on those days because the one she just bought won't cover her needs and she should have just purchased a Scarlet.

i read the post.. the guy does have many points that are well-raised... And if it is possible to have bigger pixels over a ff35 sensor rather than more resolution and higher compression... it would definately make more sense than processing huge amounts of data.

I would vote for a s35 scarlet that could shoot 3k@120fps for around $3k. This resolution is still much larger than competition and reduces the price over the 5k s35. Existing 35mm lenses could be used. I can see people paying $500-$1k more than the 2/3" just to have the lens options. I also don't think the upgrade would cost RED that much. There is a Huge gap between a $2500 scarlet and $7000 scarlet. How about something entry level on the 35mm lens level.
