  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Asked in a couple of other only vaguely related threads to no avail..Anyone know if HDMI and SDI both enabled to run simultaneously out of Scarlet. Apparently not the case on Epic ...? Any elucidation out there anywheres?

+1. Inquiring minds want to know...

somewhat guessing, but given how they're probably developing features: If it's not working on the epic, it will not be working/available on the scarlet.

That said, the long term goal is to have both working at the same time in a future firmware upgrade. For now though, the firmware enables the use of one or the other, but not both at the same time. But as is always the case, there is no announced timeframe of when (or even if) it will be available.

HDMI and HDSDI will not be simultaneous on Scarlet.
That is however planned for Epic but not optimized for that yet.

Are you saying they will never be simultaneous on Scarlet as in no plans to add that feature? It is a feature reserved for epic? This is very important for Scarlet buyers to know.

Just a thought but isn't the HD-SDI port 10 bit but the HDMI port 8bit? If I was recording direct off I would pick up an HD-SDI -> HDMI convertor and go the other way so that you keep the most amount of data possible. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Never understood that ... makes no sense.

Both can support 10 bit.

In fact HDMI supports 14 bit and up to 4K. HDMI sucks in some important ways ... but it can deliver better color depth and resolution than 3G HD-SDI

Nevertheless, everyone treats it like the proverbial redheaded step child. What gives?

Is there some technical reason cameras can't output a 10 bit 444 signal over HDMI?

Coming back to the topic of simultaneous SDI & HDMI output ... I think its a hardware limitation. The same sort of bandwidth problems that limit the cameras hardware to low frame rates (relative to Epic) probably throttles the cameras ability to drive two outputs simultaneously.

So, no, I would expect that you will not see an update to give simultaneous HDMI and SDI.

Maybe when the Scarlet Dragon upgrade program gets detailed it might be part of the functionality then. I think its been stated that they have to tear out more of the guts of Scarlet to make it work with Dragon ... so there is hope.

I wouldn't expect it though - just hope and maybe ask.

I could've sworn I read in the Epic manual that it was 10bit 4:2:2 both on HDMI and HD-SDI

I mean more for getting your signal to a client monitor, not for recording purposes. I'd send the signal to the SmallHD, from the SmallHD to the TVLogic, then the TVLogic out to client monitors/wireless transmitter HD-SDI. It's 720p HD-SDI out I believe.

3 quick important questions:

1. Does this Scarlet-X restriction on simultaneous output also apply to PLAYBACK,
or just during RECORDING? What are the framerateand resolution restrictions...

2. Does the menu system display on either the HDMI or HD-SDI output?

3. Is the output from HDMI and HD-SDI exactly the same, being 10bit 4:2:2 with AUDIO and embedded timecode?

We look forward to your response....
