Heading to Ireland with Scarlet in June. West coast archeology project on the islands. Any suggestions for travel? I may only be able to bring one lens as I have to travel light. I have RPPs and the 18-85 zoom. I was hoping to lighten up with a Nikon mount, but it won't be available. I was thinking about bringing the 18mm and punching in when needed, but I am experimenting with the zoom now. I know I should get some Switronix L95s for the air travel. Any other useful bits of info would be much appreciated.

Hi William, For batteries I travel with 4 Red Bricks for carry on and it works fine. I keep two in my camera bag and two in my other carry on. How much low light shooting are you planning on? I know you said you want a Nikon mount, I've read of one around here. Optitek I think? There might be something there, and then I'd probably snag a Versataile zoom lens like the VR 28-300, and maybe 1 wide and 1 or 2 primes if you have to shoot any low light. If your budget is big enough maybe pick up a Aluminum canon mount and just hold onto it until the end of the project then sell the mount after the trip? Or keep it to have as a rental option? That is probably the route I'd go. I don't have nikon glass but I've read alot around here and have read of an electronic mount at some point or another.

Thanks Jeffrey. I had heard the Red bricks can be problematic for some because of FAA restrictions. Good to hear you've had luck with them. Optitek makes a mount I considered, but I am not sure I can get it in time. Red comes out with theirs later this summer, so I figured I would wait. Not sure about light situations. I am figuring on mostly daylight shooting for this project.

Make sure your insurance covers you overseas.
And maybe find out what the baggage/size/weight restrictions are esp if you are trying to carryon anything....

Have fun. Ireland. Damn - will be beautiful -

Very true. My insurance is only national but most projects I take on have production/travel insurance for the gear and the shoot, call the producer and ask perhaps?

My sidehandle broke and stopped working early in the trip and luckily it should be taken care of upon our return.

RED bricks have been inspected but no problems thus far. Another smart thing to do is really look at your itinerary, during some international travel i've actually had to re-check my bags at the airport if changing carriers. Maybe pick up a canon mount if you fear the Nikon mounts are to far out?

Took it with me to Japan last week and I was fine. Had two 130wh V-mount batts and it went through US/Japan security no problem.
