Scarlet Getting Close...

some words from Sony Professional (facebook)

some words from Sony Professional (facebook)

"Price - Tentative Euro List Price. There are two models, one PMW-F3K with three lenses (35, 50, 85mm F2.0) - Euros 20,700, PMW-F3L body only model - Euros 14500. Availability is Jan 2011"

"we will be bring a Zoom lens to market"

Another interesting option.

S35, 12 stops DR, PL mount and 4:4:4 recording. Obviously falls below Scarlet S35 on many specs... but will be out Jan 2011.

This has now hit the top of my list for my shoot in June '11, unless I hear the magic words from RED.

The 17th should be an interesting day!

I'm incredibly happy that RED is finally coming out with EPIC, but to be honest what I really hope for is that Scarlet S35 can at least make it in 2011.

I am going to pick up an AF100 to do paid jobs and short films and save some money to upgrade in 2012.

At this point I think it's pretty safe to say that the excitement for Scarlet 2/3 has died down significantly. RED should really set their sights on Scarlet S35 as soon as possible.

Maybe they should rethink the strategy of getting the 2/3 systems out before and do them concurrently.

yes. red should focus on scarlet fixed (the zoom lens is going to be interesting for some kind of works) and scarlet s35 (adding the specs of the scarlet 2/3" non-fixed... ). i never understood the need of both, s35 and 2/3" non-fixed, when you can mix in just one camera... easy to chose for the customers too (fixed or not)

What are they thinking???

What are they thinking???

It would be fascinating to know what RED is thinking about all these new cameras coming out.

I have no doubt that Epic will be an AMAZING CAMERA but I question whether Scarlet is going to be as big as a hit as it sounded like in 2008.

2/3" just does not sound so impressive anymore in 2010. AF100 and now the new Sony's are really going to take the wind out of their sails in my opinion regarding the Scarlet line. And we still don't have a reliable date of when they will come out??? :(

Whatever the case, I need to go rob a bank so I can buy the Epic! :)))))

What company, other than RED and SI, are really putting a lot of R&D into 2/3" cams for Cinema? Seems to me the they are all settling around large sensor and even common PL mount for lens compatibility.

Yes 2/3" will stick for ENG. For now. But theses cameras aimed at cinema all seem to be leaving the 2/3" sensor in the past.

2/3 will be better for so many things. 3D, sports of any sort, docs, run and gun, and as far as cinema? Totally fine. Just throw on a fast lens and you've got shallow DOF when you need it. If the Scarlet 35 crops to 2/3 and has good slomo there, then it's pretty sweet for everything. Also, what's up with that F3 not having 1080 at 60P? What a joke.

So many people are enamored with sensor size as if shallow DOF was the only thing that mattered. Seriously, to overlook the fabulous advantages of the Scarlet while looking past the many shortcomings of the vDSLRs and other cameras with compromised video quality? Seems like a lot of people aren't thinking very clearly. It is downright laughable. I guess it's time for me to stop bothering with this argument. Everyone sees things through their own lens. :banghead:

Sales figures will ultimately decide what people really want. If they really want 2/3" sensor cameras, then the Scarlet fixed will sell by the boatloads.

If they want larger sensor cameras for little money, you'll see those new frankencams from sony, AF100, 7D, 5D and other large sensor cameras selling like hotcakes.

How are they frankencams?

Scarlet, 5D and 7D rigs, yes... sony and panny (as ugly as the panny is) are the complete opposite of a frankenrig. They are out of the box video cameras that few people will pay much attention to at a wedding, event, or on set.

As for 2/3"... it has it's place and is not a problem at all. Even the fixed will have f5.6 eqv.. wide open, which is hardly the end of the world for DOF... in fact, quite a nice place to be for alot of filming.

People have always have various ideas of what makes something "film like"... the key ingredient is DR, in my opinion. If you have 12+ stops, you can make something filmic.

Please stop bothering then. It's not really helpful to keep reading your unquestionable praise for RED, we get it, RED is doing some amazing things. The value of a community is the discussion that arises from various points of view. At least wait to sing the praises until you actually have the camera.

You really don't get the DOF conversation do you? Just because you have it doesn't mean you use it. The value is having it so you can use it if the project requires it. A camera that gives you all these options is a valued one, perhaps it will be the Scarlett. If you are serious about shooting then I would take some time to develop your craft instead of posting these predictable posts about RED. You're not adding anything to the conversation.

It's unlikely that anyone here will have a Scarlett by this time next year.

At least we all agree that the AF-100 is one ugly camera. I don't think they could make it any uglier if they purposely set out to make this camera as ugly as possible. For whatever reason the Sony cams always look more like they are ready for business when compared to the Panasonic cams (HVX was horribly ugly). The RED cams look like they are ready for war, which is a whole different category.

Even my old JVC HD-100 looks better than the Panasonic cams.

No, I am not trying to gin up the same comments that were debated in the other ugly camera thread. Yes looks do matter.

I wouldnt say the excitement for 2/3 has calmed down at all. Im still stupendously excited for the fixed.

Thank you Ash!

Terry (RED lemming) let us know how great the Scarlet is when it actually comes out next year or the year after!!!!!

The JVC is a sexy beast!

I think the panasonic is considered universally ugly by all. Personally, I don't like the RED designs all that much, way too over the top and army like. I'm sure I will cope though and it will probably look nicer in real life.

DOF isn’t something you either have or don’t, it’s a controllable effect. That’s why so many on here are bored with the argument. Every time a Scarlet thread opens up someone brings up the shallow DOF thing, which many (rightly) consider to be a relatively moot argument. After all, what does that even have to do with Scarlet’s nearing release? – the original post.

I think the real question is, if cameras other than RED have more appeal (for whatever reason) to any given user, then why bother posting on a RED forum?

I am in the middle of shooting an indie feature on a RED ONE with Nikon and Zeiss lenses. These are not cine lenses as we don't have anywhere near the budget to come up with multi-thousand dollar lenses. So, pulling focus on a still photo lens is not quite the same smooth process as you'll find on a Hollywood set.

I wonder how many of the shallow-DOF fans have actually faced the "other side" of shooting like this. Sometimes, when you haven't the equipment or the crew to put enough light on the set and have to open up the aperture, you end up with DOF "difficulties." And pulling focus on a jib or steadicam is not always, shall we say, all that "do-able." There are compromises in everything we do in shooting cinema. We all choose among them based on our needs and circumstances.

The real question is whether you "get it" when it comes to the overall issues of picture quality. If the ability to create shallow DOF is the only factor on which one is to judge a picture, then your argument wins hands down. But, for me, REDCODE RAW (at several different data rates; you choose), modularity (a clear growth path, less obsolescence) , HDR (and now HDRx™™™), low light capability, a more than reasonable DOF flexibility, high/variable frame rates, 3K resolution, no line skipping or binning, flexibility with lenses; these all go a lot farther in convincing me.

Yeah, I know, it's not here yet. And there are those who are sure Jannard is justing hyping us - like he was with the RED ONE, and now the Epic. FWIW, I just bought a Canon 60D, I have a JVC HD-110, I am shooting with a RED ONE, I have shot with HVX-200, EX-1s, etc. Scarlet can't come soon enough for me. For you, I know, you could care less.

I guess I am just gullible. Epic almost here. Jannard, et al, say Scarlet is right behind. I am patient. It'll get here and be worth the wait.

And BTW, it is spelled "S-C-A-R-L-E-T." But I guess some people just don't have an "eye" for detail. :rolleyes5:
