  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet frame rates vs iphone5S frame rates

Unless there is something new I don't know about, let's also not forget that the iPhone has no manual way to set the shutter speed or exposure time. Blurry slow-motion is quite useless.

Wouldn't the shutter skinny up as the speed increased.
I have an app I use called Filmic Pro that currently allows for a slightly higher bit rate and more control over exposure and such on the iphone. One of my recent shots from this actually cut in quite well against Epic footage on an Olympic spot I just shot. The winning shots were GoPro though. The new ones are quite amazing when used correctly.

Not saying is an Epic or Scarlet replacement, just that it happened.

That is what I would think Apple would incorporate into the software, but even with that I doubt it will tell you the actual speed or any subsequent values. I don't know. Maybe I'm too controlling.

One thing I did find interesting was that I could not find 120fps in the actual specs, just the featured text.

iPhone5s Vs Scarlet??? Not to bash you bro but 120 FPS on a iPhone is still
120 FPS on a IPHONE lmbo!

It's strange. I first read through this post & its replies thinking, well yes, it's like comparing apples to grapes. iPhone footage is just compressed camera phone footage. But I certainly would agree that it brings up and interesting topic of frame rates. I'm by no means a computer scientist or engineer so I can't speak to how RED grabs its footage, compresses it into R3D files and just how much is happening real time for that kind of quality to be captured given the frame rates we have now.

But to add to the mix, GoPro's specs were apparently leaked on the Hero4. And it's incredible what these low cost cameras can do these days:

Food for thought, have you heard the expression "The best camera is the one you have with you?" If I have my iPhone5S with me and need a slomo shot and don't have an Epic on hand, you better believe I'll at least try the shot on my phone. Depending on the project it might work out, and for many it won't. We were doing a shoot for Under Armour with multiple DSLRs, a go pro, and just for the hell of it we put up an iphone just for more coverage. The iPhone was one of the cleanest images in that low light situation.
