So im trying to save for my scarlet to epic upgrade, maybe even scarlet dragon

With the release of the new iphone5s and samsung note3 shooting 120fps in 720p, someone is bound to bring this up
but ...is the scarlet possible to shoot 120fps in 2k if a phone can

obviously redcode is far superior... just curious of the possibility

I know this discussion has been made many times and im not hear to be a bad egg

To be honest I personally mainly use 48fps and find that this is usually enough for me, but regarding hires...I know my clients would like at least 120fps in 2k

but...

before it was a ...if you want more frame rates go epic, or its a camera issue not a firmware thing

I know another thing people will say is...''you knew what you were paying for'' etc
but when phones at £500 can shoot higher frame rates then a £10k camera, surely something can be done

(of course the image wont match scarlet)

I know RED is not the main camera company to worry about this when most canon cameras cant even deliver 50fps at all let alone in 720p

Just a thought, not a bitching post....

what are your thoughts Scarlet users?

My only beef with your position is that as nice as it may be to have those frame rates on iphones, the reality is you have to look at the whole picture. Redcode is a superior codec to what you will get on your iphone. I'd rather have 48fps Redcode than 120fps iphone footage. That's not to say the iphone wouldn't be a good choice, because it's certainly great to have that capability in something that is always on you. But given the choice, your Scarlet would be a better option in my opinion.

It is physically not possible. The camera records RAW, the iPhone shoots heavily compressed video footage. If RED could give you more, they would, but they can't.. If you feel you need higher frame rates on a regular basis, buy an Epic, if you need it on some jobs every once in a while and you already own a Scarlet, then rent the Epic body only.. I rent my epic body only to scarlet owners at great rates, and i'm sure other Epic owners do the same thing.

But I don't think the constant threads asking RED for higher frame rates will actually get higher frame rates. Its just not possible to do with the Scarlet hardware.

thanks for the replies...

as mentioned, just thinking if it was possible considering whats out there now

I would never want iPhone 120fps over 48fps redcode haha

Save up for an epic. That is the main divide between the two cameras, it is that way for a reason. And besideds, I feel I dont have to say this, but cell phones don't quite capture the same quality images as a RED camera. :)

i not super big on frame rates, I was just curious why it wouldn't be possible...needed to know before I make the jump to epic

Im really excited to see what scarlet dragon will look like...
but I guess it will be similar to epic dragon minus frame rates since the scarlet looks like epic minus frame rates

which is NIiice

If youre more intrested in framerate then image quality perhaps you could just get the iphone 5s, or a gopro hero 3;)
I don't think you should get a scarlet if you want to shoot alot in 2k. I think 2k is to soft for my taste. 3k looks fine to me but I would not go less. Why not get an sony fs700 if you want ok images in highspeed?

But I do feel to that 120fps is starting to be a little standard. And since clients now days can have it in there consumer cameras they will start to expect it in yours. I was almost certain I would go for the scarlet dragon upgrade but later I been looking at the Epic.

yeah im not a fan of 2k, just mainly a hire thing

I always shoot 48 in 3k and avoid 2k as its too soft for me too

just get a few hires that say ''scarlet shoots 120fps right''...then i explain

Don't take this personally, but the title of this thread is a great example of why RedUser gets bashed around the industry.

Cheers - #19

I agree with you, and I'm taking it personally ;-p

hey...not only does it do 120fps...it also does it stabilized, you can edit the footage on it right away and upload it....

i guess it would be more fun to find out how many dragons would have to get sold to get the manufacturing price to iphone levels:)

I heard the Iphone was coming out with 120...so I upgraded to Epic...that should do me fine for a couple years until the Iphone 7C is out! I hope the Dragon gets higher frame rates before my clients all start kitting out their cell phones!

LOL, no but really I do hope Dragon shoots faster frame rates... cuz i have the need for speed!

OmG :mad2:

Everything is on the table when shooting.

Even in multi-cam, mainly Epic jobs I'll make sure every frame of "c-cam" gopro or "d-cam" iPhone makes it onto the dailies drive. I've had these make the final cut on national spots more times than not.

While fidelity is important, capturing the perfect moment blows it out of the water every time.

I'm more disappointed that we can't get the new color scheme going on than the frame rates. Think about it, the Epic C. The Chinese market will go wild over these.
