The Scarlet cameras look as though they will be incredible for wildlife shooting. IIRC, Red stated that the boot-up time will be something like 2 seconds, which removes one of my concerns with the Red One.

I'm trying to figure-out where the sweet-spot will be in the range of cameras / brains.

The 2/3 body only option with a Canon / Nikon mount and 35mm still optics offers unbelievable value for those of us who mainly use telephoto lenses and actually want the crop factor most of the time.

However, the wide end is a potential problem going down this route, and one solution would be to also buy the fixed lens Scarlet as a B camera.

Which makes me wonder: would a better option be to buy the S35 or FF35 Scarlet brain, and crop in post?

Would you take a hit in terms of image quality doing this compared with using the same lens on a 2/3 camera to achieve the same "target size"?

You could also consider a second 2/3" body

You could also consider a second 2/3" body

If you got a second 2/3" body and a couple wide mini-primes (and more later if you want), you have a back-up body if needed. Just switch the lens mounts.

The fixed zoom looks great, but doesn't help as much with the crop factor you are after.

Probably the 2/3" interchangeable lens will be king for nature stuff, since it's so light, compact and can shoot super high framerates. Are you saying there will be a Canon/Nikon mount option on 2/3"? If so, that would be awesome. I'm not sure what is available on the wide end, though, for 2/3"?

The Scarlet FAQ states that lens mount options include 35mm, which I take (perhaps incorrectly) to include Canon/Nikon 35mm still mounts. PL mount is also listed as an option.

The wide end is the problem if you go this route, as even a 10mm lens will be around, what, 35-40 mm FF equivalent? Switching to 2/3 lenses would be an option but that would require changing lens mounts in the field, and 2/3 HD lenses are not budget items. If you can stand carrying two camera bodies, the 2/3 fixed lens Scarlet seems an affordable solution to use for wide shots.

What I'm interested in learning is whether a S35, or better yet FF Scarlet body can be used as a single body solution: shoot wide using the full sensor for landscapes etc, and crop in post to get a larger target size where you want a tighter shot of a bird or mammal. How would this compare with shooting with a 2/3 Scarlet and not cropping in post.

I guess to some extent it depends on relative pixel size and density of the sensors?

Nikon C-mount adapters exist. There are a couple on eBay right now for $50.

Hopefully this would allow you to easily mix your Nikon lenses with Red mini primes like the 6.5mm, 8mm and 16mm without changing the (C) mount on Scarlet.

Don't see why you couldn't use the S35 body with a Canon mount. The canon mount isn't available for the 2/3 sensor. A Canon 70-200 IS F2.8 on the S35 should do what you need it to do. Add the doubler for closer shots. I wouln't think the 8X zoom model would be enough for wildlife shots as animals don't usually pose for you so you can get closer. If what you're shooting includes close up stuff, then you'll need to change lenses. Get some 3k footage and crop it and see what it looks like. If it's acceptable, then get the fixed lens option.

David, are you sure Canon mount isn't an option for the 2/3 sensor? The Scarlet FAQ includes 35mm as a mount option: what else would this be other than Canon / Nikon?

With an S35 or FF Scarlet, you wouldn't be cropping 3k footage, but 5 or 6k.

Oh, and 70-200mm isn't close to what I would use as my "standard" lens - think 400mm or 500mm!

Canon mount for the 2/3 sensor? I thought they were B4 and C mounts only. Maybe that changed since I last checked the specs. 3k - I was talking about the 2/3 sensor if you were to do cropping. If you get an s35 you might as well use a tele lens. The doubler would get you 400mm on the Canon lens at F5.6 about what you would need. After that, you'd need to spend a bit on a bigger lens. Of course you could get the Canon xl-h1 with the eos adapter - 7:1 mag - so 100mm lens would be 700mm with the adapter. But it's 1080i hdv and not 4k.

One thing you might consider is using a B4 2/3" broadcast lens with a doubler built in. They are usually pretty fast (f1.7 or better) and cover a range from relative wide (7 to 8mm in the 2/3" sensor) to moderate tele (100-140mm in 2/3"). If you engage the extender you get even more telephoto at the expense of a stop or 2. A lot of the broadcast zooms also have a macro ring for extreme closeups. But you are only toting around one camera/lens combo and won't have to fiddle with changing lenses in less than ideal situations.

What the widest, reasonably priced 2/3" lens, and what is its S35 or FF35 equivalent focal length?

I like to shoot at S35 10mm/FF35 16mm.

I think that would be a little under 4mm. Red says they will have a 6mm mini prime. Otherwise the closest thing will be a 4.5mm HD Zoom but even that was designed for 1080p so might not totally resolve the 3K of scarlet.

There is a 3.5mm c mount fisheye but I believe I have read that it is more accurately a 5mm.

Jim, any chance we can get a 4 to 5 mm mini prime on your todo list.

I'm really interested in what wide lenses will work on the 2/3" and how they would crop. I remember from the days of shooting on a Bolex EBM that some of the c-mounts weren't capable of covering the Super16 frame at the wide end.
I might be a mile out here, but a few wide angle lenses that theoretically could give the coverage, presuming there was a mount for these would be

Kern Switar 10mm=38mm ( I think??)
Olympus 7-14mm = 28mm need mount
Peleng 8mm =32mm need mount
Red 6.5mm=25mm

No death lenses, but some pretty good coverage when you add the crop factor at the telephoto end and I could live with swapping mounts, if this wasn't too much of a problem.
