Can my new Scarlet X completely replace my canon 7d for photography and Video? Will it take better photography still? (Shallower DOF, etc), Focus points (with EF lenses) etc... What about pocket wizard and external flashes etc?

Only if you get the quad battery module. As an EOS 1 and 5 owner, I couldn't see myself being happy with a 25 minute battery life on a single redvolt in the side handle. Also, there's no flash trigger. As the sensor is S35 you'll get less DOF on the Scarlet because of the larger sensor.

In theory, the best use for Scarlet as a stills camera would be when you want to shoot a fast burst in natural light at 4K, and then choose from one of hundreds for the perfect shot.

You should probably look into how professional photographs like Bruce Weber & Greg Williams shoot for Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, and W magazine. I have seen video footage and articles in various print and online magazines about how these pros used the Scarlet for their shoots.

The larger the sensor, the less DoF you have. I too am interested in using the Scarlet for photography. I shoot ballet professionally and low-light capability, fast subject tracking, and above all silence is all-important. I am keen to see Scarlet's performance in these areas, but alas, it's not something I can run down to the Best buy or my local camera dealer to check out. Any thoughts on this, especially from RED employees?

Incorrect. In 5k mode on the Scarlet the FOV is similar to APS-H. Larger than the 7D's APS-C sized sensor.
he'll get less depth of field because the larger the sensor, the less DOF.

As another point. the motion tracking in AI Follow Focus mode on the EOS 7 is probably more advanced than the Scarlett's focus system.

Right.

Ok, let's use terms like Shallower and Deeper to indicate what we mean.

Also, not being able to integrate into workflows using Lightroom or Aperture is a huge downside for this camera. It's still more a video camera then a stills camera.

I don't believe Lightroom or Aperture supports R3D files.

Shooting the SCARLET s with the EPIC will require for you to go back to school and use your imagination and play more with Continuos lighting but still been able to play a lot with Strobe lighting,
just need some trial and error... Okay lots of trial and error, but the results will be stunning that I promise you, and you will not want to go back too fast to still photography... ;)

doesn't the new REdcine allow tiff file photo extractions from the r3d and seamlessly imports them into lightroom and photoshop? That's what I thought I read

Will Scarlet replace my 5DMII on stills work? I own Canon and Zeiss glass. No doubts on the video side. But for stills...?

Why is Scarlet a Cinema tool and not a Video tool? Marketing words? Resolution level near film?

I've shot MX for stills. It's NOT the same as shooting with a DSLR. Working with strobes is very difficult. You essentially light continuously, which is fine, but a very different feel.
I'm very interested in the Scarlet for stills, but I won't be selling my DSLRs just yet.

Two reasons: resolution that will stand up to theater projection, not just TV, and progressive frame rates, rather than any kind of interlacing.

Beyond that, there is a whole philosophy of how to work, but those are the two main things.

Thanks for your replies.
Scarlet can shoot still photographs at 5K resolution (5120 x 2700 which is 14 Megapixels) at 12fps. Right?
My 5DMII RAW images are 5616 × 3744 - meaning images from a camera with 21 Megapixels.

I can´t understand the direct relation here between these numbers:
Scarlet 5120 x 2700 which is 14 Megapixels
vs
5DMII 5616 × 3744 which is 21 Megapixels

It´s a diference between the two sensors sizes that, cannot be directly compared?

I too am trying to discern the differences between Scarlet and the dSLRs. I shoot with a Nikon D2X. It is a 12MP stills camera. Great, but six years old, which is the digital era is ancient. Like many, I have been waiting for one device to give me the very best of all worlds... to be able to shoot a movie for a big screen, or a spread in my magazine. But the S35 sensor, if I'm not mistaken, is similar in size to the FS100 or even the VG10, isn't it? If, at 5K, the REd senor yields a 14MP image, is that image substantially better than my D2X? It has to be, right? After all, this is the best there is, no? I have wanted a FF camera because my 14-24 2.8 isn't able to deliver the benefits of its width in a DX format. If I plow all my acorns into the Scarlet, will I lose or gain a little FOV? I don't trust my math to go on measurements and charts. Someone must be asking themselves these questions. I want to make an intelligent decision. I have already made the emotional one. This will be what i use for the next five - six years. It needs to deliver for me. One last thought: what about using cine lenses for stills? Maybe dump the whole Nikon line and go with those CPs from Zeiss? I might only get one or two real cine lenses but it's a nice start. Is anyone that crazy? Is anyone in my boat?

I trust that there´s many people who want to do film and stills with the same tool. This Scarlet with a Canon mount was a nice surprise for me (others) who use Canon/Zeiss glass ,-) Camera bodies came and go; glass stays.
Any opinions more?
