Is anyone else hoping to utilize scarlets as part of multicam live event type shoots?

What are your likely applications?

Every year I do at least 1 live 2-day conference shoot (3 cams, powerpoint feed from the presenters, live switched with feed to recorder and multiple projectors in the room). Right now my whole system is SD and ends up on DVCam for DVD end delivery. I know that I will be transitioning to HD. I would like to use some flavor of Scarlet for the cams in this situation (with HDSDI live output).

Just wondered if anyone else is thinking along these lines.

You're not alone. I've thought about this possibility since R1 was introduced. Switch on the outputs for IMAG and reedit using the onboard recording.

If they could take the 2/3 scarlet and develop a solution to allow us to have basic remote controls of a the iris on a B4 lens, white balance and "gain", scarlet would change change the live production landscape forever. Even better if we could get power, return, tally, etc, but I'll take what they give us.

It would be pretty funny putting a scarlet on a 87x studio lens.

Either way, I'm hoping the fixed lens scarlet can become my new favorite pov cam for drum kits, thrill cams, etc.

you know what would be a great feature... being able to synch the record button among any number of RED cameras with the wireless remote. So you can just press 'go' and all cams start rolling in perfect unison, and press stop and they cut.

This is what I do for work. I would think that using Scarlet to do a muti-cam shoot would be very difficult. I can't imagine trying to get a white balance to match across the different chip. But these will be CMOS sensors instead of 3-CCD cameras. So maybe they are more accurate. Also how do you control the iris'? The Cam Ops? I just feel Red's camera aren't really setup to do studio type work but maybe you can make it work. That would be cool though!

There are at least 4 assignable buttons on the redmote...and a big dial. With a little creativity I don't see why this couldn't function like a BRM-150. I'm advocating for a remote iris - not assigning that function to the cam ops.

I was thinking something along those lines. a couple of fixed lens scarlets running around on the stage and on a jj triangle or two. Then long b4 lens on the interchangeable scarlets. run hd-sdi intercom and some home brewed tally. and wala! Now it wouldn't be as good as a truck full of hdc 1500's, but I honestly I bet no one would be able to tell the differnce. The best part is that there so cheap. You could easily have a 20 some camera concert. I'm so freaking excited right now!!! :)

oh yeah just read that, The redmote is totally a CCU controller. Though the 100ft range has me a little worried, who knows if the can be expanded, maybe with cables or something. It also says one redmote can control several cameras.

I would like to do that too. This option(for all the cameras), would be good for all Hardlined Live View shots. Scarlet 2/3 Fix would be great for all Remote Productions out of the gate but the other cameras can be modified(with third party accessories) to do this also. :weight_lift:

If Red were to do this, for all the Scarlets and Epics right out the gate, they can win on all fronts of the camera markets! :red_bandana:

Glad to hear I'm not alone in wanting to use Scarlets in live multicam hardwired productions. Perhaps a special model long range Redmote could act as CCU for these shoots. If there really is enough interest here maybe a "package" of options could be offered that would have multiple cams with features that make them "ready to use" for these applications. Then everyone could customize from there to get what they need.

ps As an aside, has anyone out there used the panasonic hs400 switcher with hdsdi in/out in remote production? PM me if you have. Thanks.

When using multiple cameras in a feature, lighting is a big issue.

For live events, you want to capture everything with a large DOF, so I'm not sure Scarlet would be the best answer.

Am I missing something here?

Not always the case. Ifyou are doing weddings and such you would want that "cinematic" look for many shots, especially with shots of the bride.

is there even a switcher that can handle 3K resolution?

(Just skimmed through the post so I apologize if this was already asked)

I was thinking more along the lines of using standard 1080i HDSDI in/out of the switcher. Hopefully you could also record 3k at the cams as well.

We use Canon 75x HD Sport lenses with the cameras in the back of the room. The DoF can get pretty tight, especially with HD cameras. I'm currently running a show with 3 of them and were 150' away from the stage. The tighest shot we can get is a shoulders up shot and focus is tough. Takes some good cam ops to nail it down. Maybe you can mount the same lens on a Scarlet?
