  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet for Documentary.

Constraints of S35?

Constraints of S35?

While the DOF of 35mm would be a pain in the butt to focus on the fly for my documentary work, I can't help but feel like I'd never be satisfied working within the constraints of S35. Besides, it sounds like the Red Electric lenses will have some autofocus capability that should help out in that regard when needed.

And what exactly are the specifics constraints of working in S35? Or specifcally the Scarlet S35?

I have been debating between the 2/3" Non-fixed Scartlet, and the S35 Scarlet.
The one factor that is tipping the hat to leaning towards the S35 is the bigger sensor, which means I will get more coverage on the sensor from my old Nikon Nikkor Primes (re: smaller Magnification Factor) But would the DOF be that much harder to maintain then using the 2/3" Scarlet with the Red mini Primes?

Any reason NOT to go for the S35 over the 2/3"?

Practically-speaking, it's a 2.5-stop difference in terms of workable depth of field -- i.e. if you shoot at f/2.0 on the 2/3" Scarlet, it would look like you were shooting at f/4.0-5.6 split on a 35mm Scarlet, assuming you matched distance but were using a shorter focal length on the 2/3" Scarlet to match field of view.

But as for whether you can deal with the focus-pulling of the S35 Scarlet if shooting like at an f/2.0 or f/2.8, it depends on the circumstances and your focusing skills. It's just that it would be easier with the 2/3" cameras simply because the extra depth of field gives you some leeway.

RED Auto Focus

RED Auto Focus

To the best of my recollection, Jim has stated that the entire DSMC line will have an autofocus function. However, for all non-fixed cameras, it may be a still-only function, and not able to autofocus while shooting motion. Also, it will obviously work only with lenses that support AF. Don't know how much of that has been worked out yet.

EDIT: Please correct me if I've misread or misremembered previous posts regarding AF. I'm pretty sure this is accurate, though.

Hey Jason, I don't pretend to know everything said on REDUSER, but I'm pretty sure that the only DSMC auto focus cameras will be the FF35. RED shows many lenses on its site but the only ones that are planned to be auto focus are the RED electronic lenses for the FF35 format. I suppose other cameras could be used with a 3rd party mount (eg Birger). The fixed Scarlet of course will have auto focus.
