  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Footage

That is straight off the sensor, hard to really call that Scarlet footage...

It is also 960x540 or similar, compressed for web and with very little movement.... and as far as I remember, didn't mention which lens was used.

Still, if you can tell from that video that the Scarlet is a great cinema camera, i'm not arguing. Personally, I want to see a little more before I make such a decision.

That seems like such a long time ago!

Anyway, we have concrete evidence to Mysterium-X's capability. We know much of the specs. It really isn't too hard imagine how good Scarlet would be.

Going from s35 to 2/3" is quite a leap and they must be packing a hell of a lot of pixels into that space to get 3k out of it.

I remain hopeful.. and i'm sure it will match the best 2/3" sensors out there, possibly even better them.

Maybe next weekend we will find out... subject to change :cryin:

I believe Jarred said the Izzy clip was a screen capture off the lab monitor output. 720p.

But the video we get to see is 960x540 I think?

Regardless, it looks nice, but nothing I couldn't pull off a 5DII (at the size we got to see it at)

I'm not saying any of this to bash, the izzy clip is a good sign of things to come.... and the sensor has been pushed alot further since then (if the improvements carry from R1 MX to the 2/3" chip).

I just think we need to hold back on the "Scarlet Rockz" kind of attitude until we see real world footage.

Yeah if you jump thru a few hoops, 5dII footage can look pretty good at 720p on static shots.

QFT. and I'm still quite fearful of the 2/3" and trying to squeeze that many pixels out of such a god-dang small sensor.

I don't know why anyone is afraid of 2/3", it's proven it's ability to be a viable option for high-end level image capture.

Most of Speed Racer, Benjamin Button, and Slumdog Millionaire were all shot with 2/3" cameras, the fact that those cameras can produce such astounding looking images, while not having any of the benefits of Redcode or Red's Color Science, I think should be enough to put everyone's mind at ease.

In addition, most of those cameras are huge bulky things, usually tethered to computers, while the Scarlet will allow you to shoot handheld with no additional accessories necessary (And usually outputting a 1080P acquisition, not a 3K one).

2/3" is a proven professional standard that can stand up admirably to 35mm, i'm not worried about 2/3", especially what Red has in mind to accomplish with it.

I know for a fact that approximately 60% of Slumdog Millionaire was shot digital and 40% on celluloid.

Right, as I said, most.

The fact that most people I talked to had no idea ANY of it was shot digitally, and that it intercut so well with 35mm footage which is the "gold standard", and no one was the wiser should be more than enough to prove to people than a 3K 2/3" camera should be more than enough to to get a professional image, the rest is up to your lighting and what you do with it, the weakness is NOT the camera system.

If 1080P or 2K 2/3" cameras can produce imagery that can be intercut seamlessly with 35mm, and go on to win academy awards for Cinematography, than there is no reason to think that the 2/3" Scarlet won't be up to snuff.

It's a 4.9 megapixel sensor. A lot of current point and shoot still cams squeeze twice that resolution out of smaller sensors. The pixel size for Scarlet is still large enough for excellent sensitivity and dynamic range.

So no scarlet footage anytime soon. Jarred said that the team is totally Epic focused at the moment. Expect updates after Epic gets out the door which may be a while. I have been checking this site less frequently. Every time I log on, I see the tumbleweeds rolling across the screen :(
