Hi guys, non red owner here still saving up for a scarlet. I wanted to ask you guys if anyone has shot footage outdoors in the sun with no lights/modifiers etc, just guerilla style. How well does the sensor capture the sun or at least the sky on a sunny day?

IMHO - outdoors with natural light is where the Scarlet truly shines...:

almost all footage there (except 1-2 clips) is done with the Scarlets or Epics

The sensor is fantastic IF you expose properly. But in many cases even if you do mistakes you can fix them with the free rcx program.

The MX sensor is truly robust and performs best when rated at 5600K. The range and bit-depth can combine to create stunning shots in most environments, and definitely outside on a sunny day.

To add to Andrew's point about ND filtration, you'll also want to be sure to use IRND or HOT MIRROR ND filters, especially when using powers higher than 1.2ND. Without getting too technical, it filters out the infrared pollution, which is something the RED sensor needs help to accomplish.
Not using proper filtration outside is a common mistake made with digital cameras, and especially Scarlet/Epics.

I just wanted to throw that note out there. (There are MANY threads on RedUser about IRND v. Hot Mirror, so read as you please!)

Nice work peter :)

Though -- if you're not blessed with gorgeous haze, clouds and non human subjects --

and instead you've got a white guy in 1pm summer sun squinting

That last stop of highlight on skin before clipping doesn't always look nice
(talking MX here everyone, and quite frankly every camera in the right bit of ugly sun)

Do a blackshade for the heat you're shooting in
consider shooting a slightly higher ISO (compensating with ND or stop), to prioritize highlight detail
Check noise in shadows on a decent monitor or waveform, or prepare for a little denoise in post
Position subject

the fourth is going to do more wonders than the first three put together :)

i like my scarlet in the sun because harsh cruel hard sun tends to hold within the camera's DR.
there aren't many cameras that will match that and hold the extremes
but it's all about where you want those extremes and mids to fall
makes more of a difference than camera choice I think

Scarlet outside is great! Enough DR, great colors, but as already mentioned, the infrared pollution is awful in certain bright daylight conditions.

In my bag I have the following set of ND filters (Schneider 4x4) to battle all situations - based on the many threads on this subject and my own experience:
0.3 ND
0.9 ND
1.2 IRND
1.8 IRND

Thanks everyone! Scarlet is impressive. Looks like I need to do some research on filtration because I've been so used my FS700's built in ND Filters.

I bought a 82mm variable ND (GENUSTECH - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1025475-REG/genustech_g_eclipse82_82mm_eclipse_nd_fader.html) and just got the appropriate step-up rings for each of my lenses to get their front screw-in size up to 82mm (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/11691-REG/B_W_65_027525_72_82_mm_Step_up_Ring.html).
Don't forget to get 82mm lens cups for each of your lenses (and a spare one) and one 86mm for the front element of the GENUSTECH. I also have a set of spare step-up rings that I can use of lenses other then mine...
