  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet fixed or interchangeable for 3D?

I wonder if the zooms could be matched somehow with two fixed Scarlets and be able to use the redmote (pro) for synced zoom, focus and iris pull?

Am I just dreaming or could this be technically possible? Now that would be super small and very easy to use in a run and gun type of shoot.

Till the ZOOM on the Fix SCARLET can be properly tested for 3D applications, as to track the inner movement of the movement of the inner elements while zooming and or focusing, no one can say.

However even so thinner, the Fix SCARLET it is a bit longer then the EPIC body, so at the end not much smaller then an EPIC with a small Prime, so for a Small 3D set up, again, the real KING here
will be the Interchangeable SCARLET, especially with the RED MINI PRIMES.

Maybe Red thought of this and will sell matched pairs of Scarlet fixed especially for 3D. One of the biggest challenges of shooting documentaries in 3D is the need to recalibrate the rig each time you change lenses or zoom. There are other solutions, but very expensive ones.

Ketch, you are right about the Scarlet with Red mini primes being a very desierable, small and light rig but is it convinient for shooting run and gun type of stuff? How much time would it take to change lenses and recalibrate?

With current 3D rigs offerings, I have changed Primes and ready to shoot in less then 10 minutes, of course I have been practicing... ;)

I simply believe that Primes still old huge advantages to Zooms, no matter how good the zooms are getting, so couple of Fixed SCARLET for BTS and Special work,
and couple of Interchangeable SCARLET for 3D... ;)

The only problem is, that the type of rigs you are talking about are rather expensive for most considering Scarlet. They cost 5-10 times the price of a couple of scarlets and for most documentary type work you need at least two rigs.

I realize zooms are not as good as primes, but using the remote capabilities of Scarlet for synced lens control would mean considerable savings for lower budget productions. The question is if it's technically possible or not?

You are right, I guess I'm just killing time till november 3rd comes along :)

But seriously, anyone who makes an affordable, but high quality camera suitable for serious 3D shooting could help multiply the amount of content and speed up the adoption of 3D.

The simple answer is that yes it could work. It would take fixing in post because of zoom tracking (like everyone else has mentioned). So, shooting with Scarlet might be a great idea for the 3D on a budget people. And now the 3D post tools are becoming more and more affordable (under $1,000 is pretty reasonable), it just depends on what rig, and as always the most important thing are your technicians. You have a badass Rig Tech, he/she can make any rig work with almost any 3D friendly camera. One rig tech can probably align two Scarlets in 10 minutes, and someone else who knows the rig well can do it in 5.

So, once they're released I'm sure we'll get some asap at Offhollywood and I'll throw them on every rig we have and report back.

Check out the Hurricane rig

Genus distribute it in the US.

It;s about $8K and very very good.

Doug wouldn't it be possible to fix zoom tracking on the fly with internal servos (like optical stabilisation)? I know it can be done in post, but I'd rather shoot as close to properly aligned as possible.

Like I said I shoot documentaries and often times with fast changing action and its hard to say "hold it there, it'll only take 5 minutes" while working with wild animals for example. At the moment I am actually my own Rig Tech :) "badass" or not its my only option as I live in a country where 3d is almost non existent and I had to train myself over the years. My only limitation shooting independent factual entertainment is the gear I can afford. I know I could shoot with a 3ality TS5 rig to solve the issue, but that would be overkill for a pair of Scarlets.

Don't get me wrong, I shoot professionally with properly aligned, genlocked cameras recording to synced 3d recorders. But my rigs need to be light and quickly adjustable, otherwise I need to shoot in a movie set style (which I did with my last production), but it required way too many people and time and it's not really suitable for reality type documentaries.

Anyway thanks for your input, I'd be glad to hear your experiences once you get some Scarlets. Maybe Scarlet will finally give is us a solution for shooting high quality action documentary for 3DTV. I don't really see 3D becoming mainstream very fast unless there is considerably more content and that will only happen once 3D tech gets lighter and easier to use for lower budget productions. Just my 2 cents :)

Thanks Geoff, I actually own a Hurricane :) The problem remains, that you either need very expensive and heavy lenses and lens control equipment to shoot fast paced action or sacrifice quality and flexibility. I know I want too much, but I still think something like the fixed Scarlet could solve this if the zoom, iris and focus could be synchronized and controlled with its own RedMote. Now that would be light, fast and hopefully affordable for professional, but lower budget productions.

The question remains. Is this just my dream or technologically feasible at the price point of Scarlet?
