  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet ETA

While I do think it's probable that once EPIC is finished the development of Scarlet S35 should pretty much be as well, I don't think RED can produce and ship these cameras so fast and close together.

Remember, the RED one was an unproven camera. Now it's well established.

Due to the amazing features I can see RED being pretty busy with supplying EPICs for some time.

I find it very unlikely we'll see Scarlet S35 in 2011.

So that's why the AF100 makes me happy. It's not a camera I'd shoot a feature film on, but for everything else, I think it'll do the job just fine.

Thomas, I for one am planning on shooting a feature with a couple of AF100's. I'd like to consider the Scarlet but it's not going to be here I fear before I start. The Red one is a nice camera but I need several and I'm going covert with some of this stuff so a smaller more inconspicuous options suits this project.

I also have a future feature film project that I intend to shoot next year, but I'm gonna try to get a nice deal on a RED MX camera for a month or so before I settle on using an AF100.

As good as MX is, the fact that a RED ONE just got way more expensive isn't helping bringing rental rates down.

Yeh, for next year's project I'm looking at the following options:
1) Use existing kit (5D2 and 7D). Not ideal, I'm fecd up with the damn things overheating if nothing else.
2) Hire a Red One. Extremely expensive given there will be a learning curve to get up and no kit in kit room at the end of it.
3) Buy an AF100.
4) Buy a Scarlet.

If the Scarlet is available by the time I need it, I'll buy it. Otherwise I'll probably go for an AF100 because I get to keep it after the project (unlike hiring R1), it will probably be a step up in quality from the Canons and will DEFINITELY be a big step up in useability and shooting ergonomics from the Canons, which will make for shorter shoots and therefore cheaper shoots.

There's clearly no comparison between the on-paper capabilities of an AF100 and a Scarlet, but to compare real performances you need real cameras. I'm fairly confident that by the time I need it, I will be able to walk into my supplier and buy an AF100. I'm not at all confident that I will be able to get my hands on a Scarlet, sadly.

Cheers, Hywel.
