We've had a 3D job come in recently, and so its all about 3D in our office at the moment. I remembered there was a render of a 3D Rig for the DSMC system some time ago, is that likely to happen?

Assuming it does, will RED ever be likely to release some sort of REDalert/cine/rushes style 3D program?

I would really love to learn the ETA of the 3D unit.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but it can't be too difficult to manufacture the RED 3D rig.

It's been designed at least to a rather advanced level as far as the render is concerned. It's only compatible with Scarlet/Epic so that greatly simplifies the design as well. It's only designed for parallell rigs, no beamsplitter/mirror use which, once again, simplifies the rig.

Perhaps it's my lack of knowledge but it can't cost too much/take too long to deliver. Would I be wrong to assume that it would be doable by Scarlet 2/3" launch/soon after?

Even with two 2/3"s side-by-side you still can't get ALL of your shots right. You need a mirror rig for doing good 3D, no matter what. Add to that the fact you might need to do adjustments in post that may soften an image slightly, ideally it's probably best to go with higher resolutions than the 2/3" chip for 3D.

Mirror rig is pretty much required for serious cinema work with larger cameras.

But How critical is the application? We have been working with two inexpensive Canon 1080P (24Mbps H.265) cameras that allow a very tight side by side intraocular on a simple bracket - edited with the Dashwood 3D plugin for Final Cut - with pretty impressive results.

Remember 1080P is only 6 percent less than 2K which is the resolution AVATAR was made in.

We will know something soon, but I'm sure you know already what you need as far as gear set up to shoot your project, but a By lateral Stereo set up were you can only control your I/O distance and Convergence, will not otherwise give you full creative control.

we are currently testing an array of set ups and also look forward to test the Scarlet and Epic configuration in alternative S3D set ups, will be in LA all day also on monday to check out few more.

Definitely looking forward to see what RED has up their sleeves for S3D system configuration, but just remember that a 3D system for shooting a Movie will need to really be top notch, or or it will make you and your crew suffer, in trying and getting things right with all the mathematical calculations.

Keep in mind the newly defined SMPTE resolutions for future 3-D is 2K for each eye. So the Scarlet 2/3 is a good system for 3-D even allowing for extra framing space for convergence adjustments in post.

Element Technica

I had a chance to check out Element Technica's Quasar rig a few weeks ago, which I would recommend checking out. I am working on a short in April that will be using this rig.. I'll try and post more details throughout the process.
