  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET DRAGONS begin to ship

I'm trying to figure out the actual frame rate for the scarlet dragon with a base of 25fps, could it do 50fps in 5kff at a lower compression, or would it be able to do it in 5khd or not at all. Whats the lowest compression ratio for 5kff at 25fps, also if the mini mag makes a difference. Looking at the manual i'm still a bit confused.

Kind Regards
Ian

Does this hold true for Epic X to Dragon? Thinking of getting a new Epic X now, and upgrade later

Yes, would expect you will have some time where you will be able to buy EPIC M-X now and upgrade to DRAGON sensor later.

Please note the specs in the large table (in the media operations guide) are based off of a 23.98 time base, 8:1 REDCODE setting. In the tech spec summaries in the DSMC operations guide and on RED.com product pages, those values are the absolute maximum sensor frame rates, regardless of time base or REDCODE setting.

Hi Brent.
Would it be possible to know what are the different compression ratios for the different resolution/frame rates? I cannot find them anywhere at red.com or the operation manual.
Many thanks.

TD, our Signal Corps (ie, tech writing team) is actually working on this today as we speak.

Excuse my slowness, I get it now, looks like epic dragon has a very clear distinction now.

I'm sorry, but this means that Scarlet Dragon guys will now be 100% destroying my client base of camera rentals, while I still wait for my upgrade e-mail. So when I upgrade, I will likely never recoup my $10 000.

Because I am not completely clueless about how the business and amortization works, I fail to see how this is supposed to be good news for me or any Epic X owner still waiting for their upgrade. I am not a charity for indy filmmakers I have never met. I give to many other charities already.

Please, those about to chime in with comments about passion and talent and whatever, gear purchases are investments, they are business, and gear rentals on the side that make ownership financially viable are pure business and have nothing to do with art. How I sell myself as a creative talent is a completely separate issue, because I can rent the same gear and do the same projects for the same clients.

As a businessman - and only a soon-to-be-broke fool or a trust fund kid would throw around $10 000 out of "passion" - this news is just a kick in my face, and a kick in the face of all Epic X owners still waiting for an upgrade e-mail.

So I guess it makes more sense at this point to get a new Scarlet Dragon rather than getting a regular one and waiting to upgrade the sensor later?

Happy to let you guys know that the Scarlet Dragon line is up and running and the first batch of Scarlet Dragons will be shipped out today. Everyone that ordered first day of NAB should be getting notified this morning.

Orders between day 2 of NAB through to today will be shipped over the next 2 weeks.

i like the look of this. invasion. ... :-)

For the record if you can afford the fan upgrade you should go for it. I am very impressed at the lack of noise!

Brent and staff? I put in an order the day this was posted. Do you really think that it will be shipped within the two week time frame that was posted? if so, ill be really excited. Just got my Epic Dragon yesterday and I want to tag team some ish.

Hey Brian, is that both top and bottom, or original bottom fan 1.0 + top fan on Scarlet-D?

Trying to get the quietest/cheapest config, but I'm worried my bottom plate/15mm rails aren't compatible and/or top plate won't fit -- I don't want to spend an extortionist's fee on fans, only to have to pay more $$ for new cage too (insult to injury.)

I only heard it on Epic Dragon with both fans replaced... I would suggest it whether your staying MX or going for Dragon, whether its Scarlet or Dragon cuz its amazingly better and audio guys will love you

I'm on another shoot today but will be posting stills from this weekend tonight.

We did the Baltimore 48 Hour Film Festival. It had been years since we had done it and figured it was a great way to put the camera through it's paces.

We drew Film Noir as are genre and decided to go very classical with hi-con Black and White. All I say is the tonal range on Dragon competes destroys the MX. Because of the look we were going for, we wanted to shoot deep stops and had very minimal crew with a very small G/E package and no crew.

2000 ASA @ T5.6 was so sexy and the tonality in the shadows was superb.

Is the Scarlet Dragons field of view for 5K equal to its field of view on MX at 4K? Or is it less or more?
