A few questions.
If you own the Scarlet, there is an option to upgrade to the Dragon Sensor for about 10K.

-What is the difference if you have the Epic and upgrading it to the Dragon?
-Why are there lower frame rates if you have the Scarlet?
-What if you want more frame rates, do you need to upgrade to the Epic then the Dragon?
-What if you went Scarlet to the Dragon, cant get more frame rates?

The Red Epic and the Scarlet to Dragon upgrade is the same price.
What would be the better buy then?

There are a lot of threads on this subject. You should do a search.

1) You can't get Epic frame rates from a Scarlet.
2) Scarlet Dragon will give you Dragon dynamic range and color on the Scarlet.
3) Epic will give you Epic frame rates and resolution, but not Dragon
4) Upgrading to Epic will give you the option to go Dragon later down the line.

To get the frame rates you need to get the epic and/or then upgrade to the dragon from what I understand.
So, if I go scarlet to dragon, can i somehow downgrade? to epic from the dragon to get the frame rates but have the dragon sensor or is that not possible?

Just been thinking of getting a new camera. Now that I heard about the dragon upgrade from the scarlet being the same price as the epic itself, not sure which would be better suited for me.
That is, unless if the Sony F5/F55 drops in price or becomes the more popular camera.

There is no way to downgrade. From a Scarlet-X you can upgrade to a EPIC-X or Scarlet Dragon, and from a EPIC-X you can upgrade to a EPIC-Dragon.

It's all on the RED.com webstore… Pretty straightforward.

From Scarlet you can upgrade to EPIC MX(non Dragon) for $9,500 - for that you get 5K and a wider range of frame rates - but not Dragon

From Scarlet you can upgrade to Epic Dragon for $19,000 - for that you get Dragon 6K and a wider range of frame rates

From Scarlet you can upgrade to Scarlet Dragon for $9,500 - for that you get Dragon at 5K and a slightly wider range of frame rates than Scarlet has now, but not as many as Epic Dragon

Epic will always have more frame rates and higher (usable motion) resolution than Epic - if you need slo-mo at full resolution then get an Epic… if you don't then get a Scarlet. If you need the widest dynamic range then get Dragon - again Epic dragon if you need frame rates, or Scarlet dragon if you don't.

I've got two Scarlets; one is going back for an Epic Dragon upgrade, and one just for a Scarlet dragon upgrade.

If you don't shoot every week, or have paying gigs falling out of your pockets - maybe renting until you figure it out is the better idea?

It should be noted that nothing about Scarlet Dragon is yet written in stone. Last word was that specs were still being finalized.

Hi, Terry,
Perhaps not all, but the specs at the red store seem to be close to definitive (unless someone from red has expressed otherwise here in the forum, which I may have very well missed).

cheers

Michael,

I just wanted to comment on your website listing "Rentals" and Red Epic... you listed it's acquisition of data at 10bit, but the camera captures 12 and 16 bit RAW.

if you buy an external recorder and I believe upgrade, then the F55 can record some sort of 12 and 16bit RAW
Notably, the AXS-R5 recorder¹ can be mounted onto the rear of the F55, enabling 4K and 2K 16-bit RAW recording and high speed frame rates of up to 240 fps in 2K²

Ah, true. No idea why it said that. thanks for the heads up.

The F55 isnt mine. I offer the rentals, but its not mine.

Quick related question, when a Scarlet is upgraded to Epic- is it a full on Epic or similar to the Scarlet Dragon with limitations?

An Epic is an Epic, a Scarlet is an Epic with limitations :D

i did the upgrade from scarlet to epic back in sept...its pretty sweet!

If you purchase a Scarlet through a private sale, are you not eligible for an upgrade unless you pay the $500 red transfer fee and inspection?

You don't have to do the inspection, but I would assume you want to do the transfer.
