  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Would someone mind explaining this:

1-48 fps 5K FF at 5:1 compression

Of coarse I have high hopes, but I was hoping this is some kind of option to shoot 5K in the Scarlet Dragon and utilize the full sensor. Is that 5K (full frame) up to 48fps? I would literally go run a victory lap if that was the case...probably not though. Never seen that as an option on a RED cam.

I also saw this on the RED.com website this morning under the upgrade specs. They are legit

There is no reason to believe this isn't true. However, to be clear, "full frame" in this case is not the 36 x 24 mm "full frame" often referred to in discussing lens coverage but, rather, shooting the full 5120 x 2700 pixels of the sensor. Did I correctly understand the nature of your disbelief?

Got it. I see. I am still pouring through the specs. I guess I was thinking at first that it was possible to capture the same FOV of the full 6K sensor but shoot in 5K. Just a FOV question really. Makes sense thought. 5120x2700 is the active pixel array. So that would be FF in this respect. Thanks Terry

Yeah - the data was pulled just now from their website. Wasn't there when I woke up, but it magically appeared when I started an REQ thread!

Any thoughts on matching two Scarlets: One Dragon & One Without in a 3D rig? Do we think the color sciences and dynamic ranges too different? My guess is that they are likely too dissimilar. But suppose a GENlock, timecode sync and shutter sync is set up, will it match?

Thinking about doing our upgrades on different dates... when we can afford it :)

So, what are the crop factors of Dragon? Is 5K dragon the same 1.3 corp factor as 5K MX? I've found it INCREDIBLY useful to have the 5K, 4K, and 3K crop factors memorized whether I'm shooting or DITing.

I believe, and please correct me if I am wrong, 5K on Dragon Scarlet has 1.44 crop crop factor. So it is a wider FOV than 4k on the Scarlet X but not as wide as 5K on an Epic X. Right around S35.

So I take it the 48 Red Mags do not work? What is the maximum data rate that they can handle? For Epic Users, can they be used at 5k at 24 fps at a high compression? I am just curious, I was just thinking of buying a couple.

No problem, I'm overly joyed by the tech specs of the scarlet Dragon! It's the route I'm going once I get the cash together to upgrade probably going to get a red rocket x card as well, ill just rent an epic dragon if its ever needed for the time being, the choice to go scarlet dragon is that I'm attached to it sentimentally as well. One thing I hope RED does do is come out with a grey version of the DSMC 2.0 fan upgrade that says dragon:-D would be nice but if not its not a biggie.

I wonder if there will be a new Scarlet Dragon tattoo on the body?

I'm talking the upgrade of course.

I would honestly change the color from grey to something else e.g RED ;)

Well at least regardless the side SSD will get Dragon laser etched into it, though I would definitely not mind getting it back as a red color lol
