  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet dilemma

BT scarlet fire sale 4k for $400 bucks lol?

I love my scarlet, and i've found the footage to be identical to epic-mx at 4k 6:1. Also overheating is no worse than epic - and on that note if you know your camera well heat and fan noise can be controlled and will not be an issue. Only major drawback for me is not having slow-mo, which makes me constantly dream of upgrading to epic!

Yes, but few people shoot 4K 6"1 on Epic, why do this when you can go to 5K on most lenses? 5K does look noticeably different from 4k, cleaner when downscaled, wider field of view - and 3:1 is something to behold when you get to grading.

Ps not talking new tech. Talking existing tech at new pricing.

I know you are. I was just curious what reasons you have for predicting a Scarlet MX price drop on Dec. 1. Your response was "I'm sensing a wind change..." If that is your only reason then OK. I do not wish to belabor the point.

All based on assumption here...

...but competitiveness. Cameras like the FS-7 are now being released, shoot ready, for a lower cost and better specs (at least on paper). I have never shot with the camera and only mildly like the images I have seen of the FS-7. That said, no doubt that new tech from other companies are going to start sweeping across the lower end of the professional market. Until now, the Scarlet has been the best bang for the buck. That may not be the case in the following months unless there is a price drop.

Also...for camera tech that was released the end of 2011...and now it is almost 2015...its probably due for a little nudge to open up the lower market to the RED ecosystem.

...and 3:1 is something to behold when you get to grading.

Besides HFR the 3:1 has always been the only reason to upgrade to EPIC for me :)

BT Scarlet since 2012 Fall and still rolling...

Scott - I agree with the potential for a price drop on Scarlet in January and my reasoning is this: it has been stated that the upgrade price for Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon will go up by $3K (to $12.5K). Bit I really don't think there is room or desire to raise the price of the Dragon itself. So, to equalize the pressure in the market, I see a dropping of the price on Scarlet-X and, eventually, the possibility of phasing out Scarlet-X altogether.

@Scott .....what Michael & Terry said ; )

P.s I'm sort a wondering about Epic MX as we'll.

The product lines are already clearly differentiated by price and there is a logical spot carved out for each. Why would there be pressure to change dragon prices now? The price break on Scarlet Dragon was a short term loyalty reward. You understand markets much better than I do Terry, why would the end of that promotion put pressure on the established pricing?

So far as the FS-7 is concerned I'm fairly ignorant. I was unaware that competition was so close already as to be putting downward pressure on Scarlet prices. @Mike, that was just the kind of info I was trying to draw from you. Thanks guys.
