  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After having my Scarlet for a few months, I'm finally annoyed that it wont record audio!
The previous owner mentioned that it might have a broken preamp, but I'm not sure what the situation is.

Is there anyone in the US that is able to diagnose these old DSMC1 bodies?

I have the 2012 BT Scarlet (original owner) and never bothered to update that.
Was I supposed to experience something to have that done?
This baby doesn't get rented as much of late and sadly most of the dealings with RED are post VFX/Edit.
So I'm usually tampering with others footies :(

If you're able to keep the camera in cool environments then you should be fine, but just a tip heat will kill these cameras quick. I always recommend the fan upgrade to anyone who doesn't have it done.
 
How much are you selling the fans for? I can install it myself, however, if you have some in stock, I am interested.
 
Hey Patrick, I purchased a top fan 2.0 upgrade from Joshua for my Epic M and installed it. Works fine and definitely worth doing.
Nice to know he's around for us DSMC 1 owners going forward.
 
How would I know if my Scarlet DSMC1 has had the fan upgrade or not??? Is there an obvious physical difference someone can explain to me?

The bottom fan vent is small and flat or obstructs from the body? If it's big, the fan is 2.0 inside.
Also 1.0 doesn't have a top fan, while most cams with 2.0 have the top fan. The top fan can be installed on any camera, no matter what version is the bottom fan.

Also most of the M versions of the camera had to be sent to Red for the board swap to be able to work with fans in a wider speed range (on the non-upgraded M body the fans on Adaptive run from 35% up to 75%, while on a regular MX body they range from 25% up to 100%). If the original owner for some reason didn't do that - you'll end up having different pin-out from the body to the bottom fan. Upgraded one's have 4 pins, non-upgraded have 3-pins on the fan board inside the cam.

Hi Josh,
I seem to remember a lower and upper fan upgrade. I never did either so whats the cost? And a ball-park postage to the UK?
Cheers buddy.. adn you dont know anyone with a RedMag reader do you? My USB connection is gettin dodgier by the day! :-)

The top and bottom is $300. Also I can repair the port on your reader.
 
Well, it appears I have the version 1.0 fan in my Scarlet Dragon. It's currently very quiet. Does the 2.0 fan upgrade make more noise? So far, shooting even in summer heat, I have yet to have a problem, but now you've got me worried!

Can the top fan be set to change speeds (like my 1.0 version) when recording?

I've zero experience with v1. I do know that the V2 bottom fan will plug and play you would need additional work done. I can make you deal though, I can upgrade your scarlet dragon to an epic Dragon and replace the fans with V2.
