Okay, I know that everyone is all hyped up about Epic and what-not, but what I'm really curious about is how much I can realistically expect a "ready to shoot" Scarlet S35 to cost. Epic is way into rental territory for me, and I'm wondering if it would be feasible for me to own a Scarlet. Looking at the price list from the red.com main page (assuming the price list is at least semi-accurate) I see a lot of options and parts I can buy, which confuses the heck out of me. I'm not looking for a "bare bones" setup, but one that is reasonably complete with the ability to pull focus on Canon lenses without adding a lot of aftermarket crap to it.

I've put together the parts that I THINK I need and a justification for why I think I need them. If someone could chime in as to whether this makes any sense, I'd really appreciate it.

S35 Brain = a "no brainer" :D
5" touch LCD = a reasonably sized screen for focus work
Redmote Pro = for the focus knob
Scarlet Rear Module = I guess this is needed?
Base I/O module = I guess I'll also need ports?
Dual CF reader = This seems like it makes more sense than the side CF module
Battery Module = I suppose I'll want to unplug from the wall at some point
Canon Mount = I want to use Canon Glass
Scarlet Baseplate = To mount the camera on to stuff, like a tripod

Add all those up and the total comes to... $15,600. Does this sound right? Seems high for some reason, but maybe I'm expecting too much?

edit: I already have Anton Bauer batteries, does this mean I don't need the battery module? How necessary is the touch LCD if I already have an external monitor?

Yes..seems about right. Things add up very..very quickly.
Might be able to save some since red may sell budled production packages.

Sounds quite reasonable. I would pick the rear SSD module over the CF though.
I did a similar exercise fitting out a 2/3" cinema model with all the extras to match it pretty much feature for feature with a Sony PMW350 and it came out to around $17k. That included the same B4 lens as on the Sony and the bomb EVF too though.
I hope to keep a Cinema package somewhere around $10k including my used 16mm glass.

You shouldn't need the battery module. There are 3rd party accessories which allow you to use AB batteries on a Red (like the Anton Bauer QR-RED), and since Red One accessories will work on the Scarlets/Epics don't see why the AB adapter plate wouldn't work too.

Yeah things add up rather quickly, but is really inexpensive for what you get

I hope that Scarlet fixed will be a camera that is tough to exhaust as far as capability is concerned.. I'm gonna push her, we shall see, time will tell, bye bye.

I guess it really isn't all that expensive when you consider that it's supposed to be "better" than the Red One at a lower cost. Ready to shoot camera for $15k minus lenses really is very good for a raw-recording 5k S35 camera with motion HDR (I hope). 2 years ago, an EX3 + Letus wasn't uncommon, and that's about $13k for much, much less capability. Panasonic's new AF-100 might cost around $8000 for the body plus a proper media recorder, but it's "only" a 4/3 and can only output 1080p... just trying to justify this to myself.

Maybe I'm still stuck in pipe-dream land when Scarlet was supposed to cost around $3k!

Well the bare brain will still cost about $3k.:beatdeadhorse5:

The biggest disappointment about the AF100 is that at best using an external recorder it will be an 8 bit 4:2:2 HD camera. Barry Green at DVXuser said he tested the GH1 and it had a maximum DR of about 8.3 stops, the 5DII and 7D have similar DR limits in video mode. Such are the practical limits of an 8 bit 4:2:0 AVCHD codec.

Barry reported the AF100 DR was about 10+ using 4:2:0 AVCHD

Here's what I'm thinking...

S35 Scarlet - $7000
2.8" LCD - $900
Side CF module - $500
Side handle w/built-in battery - $950
Canon mount - $500
TOTAL = $9850

This is about as bare bones as you can get (assuming you already own Canon lenses.) Throw in some CF cards, a Fader ND filter, and a few REDVOLT batteries, and you've got a camera that beats the pants off anything out there short of an EPIC for around $12000.

That's the road I'm gonna take. Plus two CF cards.

Though what I probably see happening is me getting Scarlet 2/3 fixed and once Scarlet S35 hits keeping all the modules and selling the brain.

That's probably the smartest move for the filmmaker on a budget.

Though I have to say the REDmote Pro seems like a must have tool with the focus ring.

RED Scarlet Fixed 8x $ 4.750
Scarlet Module Adapter $ 300
RED SDD 1.8" Module $ 1.500
RES Station Reader 1.8" $ 250
RED SDD Mag 1.8" 128GB $ 1.800
Total of $8.600
And a microfone, an extra batteriy, perhaps the Scarlet Base Plate ($300), the Scarlet Side Handle ($950) and the Scarlet Top Mount ($200) and still counting...

I'd love to see a starter kit (including a zoom lense) for the Scarlet 2/3 and the S35 for nonprofessional documentary purposes.

I'm on a budget & I'll need a cam no later than spring 2011 & the :furious3: AG-AF101E is tempting me more & more each day. I know that a S35 is way better but...it doesn't exist yet. S35 on a "run & gun" rig would fit really my needs (but not sure for the required budget). Are they planning to release cheaper testing S35 cams ?

2/3" format is much better in general for run and gun doc work if you want a compact shoulder rig and a good fast zoom with some range to it. The fixed 2/3" will be ideal for this role. You could not buy an equivalent servo zoom for the 2/3" interchangeable, S35, or AF100 for less than about $8k-10K used. The S35/AF100 lens alone would weigh more than the entire Scarlet fixed rig.

You also need the SSD mag module.
Side module $2500 or rear module $1500.
