  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Folks,

We do quite a bit of VFX work working with live plates. Various software packages will need to know specifics about the camera to properly match the footage - whether it be for matchmoving or 3D tracking. What the appropriate filmback sizes for the Scarlet? I imagine it would change depending on the resolution of the shot.

Does anyone know these figures off hand?

I had to figure this out for our Nuke artist a few months back. I don't remember the numbers I came up with. What I DO remember, is how I got the answer.

First, look at this chart: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet

Second, read up on sensor sizes on Wikipedia if you're lacking any general knowledge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format

Using the numbers posted in the first chart, know the full Scarlet sensor is APS-H. Which is a 1.3 crop factor of full 35mm. So APS-H size times 1.3 = Full frame, or a crop factor of 1 (AKA no crop factor).

As you notch down in resolution, to 4K, 3K, or below, you are changing how much of the sensor you are using (refer to the Scarlet chart linked above). Which changes your useable sensor size. AKA your "filmback".

I forget if Filmback was looking for the vertical size of the sensor, or the diagonal. Whichever it is, this is all the knowledge I had when I helped our Nuke artist figure out the Filmback of Red-1 MX footage a few months back. This and some 7th grade math.

Any updates that covers the Scarlet 4096x2160 4k 1.9:1 and 3840x2160 quad hd 16:9?

If I did this right..
Scarlet/Epic at
4k would be with 22,12mm x height 11.66mm
Quad hd 3840x2160 är with mm 20.74 and height 11.66

Can anybody confirm this. Maby Jeff Kilgroe or Gavin Greenwait:thumbsup:
 
The equation is:

5.4 * Resolution / 1000 = size in mm

So QuadHD would be 3840 * 5.4 / 1000 = 20.736 film back (vertical size doesn't actually matter to film-back almost all software just wants the horizontal dim.
