Scarlet and Nikon lens...

I'll allow myself to share an opinion here.

First, I [personally] am not complaining. Just being greedy for perfection [again].

The specs which RED announced for the Scarlet are mind-blowing:

2/3" Sensor, 3K, RAW, 1-120 fps, CF recording [up to 100 Mb/Sec.] and a [supposed} ~ 3000 $ price point.

Well... it'd be fair to say that this is even more revolutionary than the RED One itself.

This is dream-land. It's MUCH more than I [for one] expected.

And yes, I am pleasantly surprised. :)

Second, my opinion refers to indie-filmmaking only. Other uses have other needs. I'm just expressing my own opinion.

The only thing missing is a selectable lens solution.

Again, this is not a complaint, just another Christmas wish.

Most of us will be using some workarounds anyway.

Light- and effort- consuming 35 adapters and such.

Why leave this business to other companies?

The indies will be seeking selectable solutions for Scarlet anyway.

Why leave that task\profit\credit to other companies?

Mr. Jannard, you have raised the bar SO high.

And I'm speaking of Scarlet alone, the RED One is another Universe.

We're not comparing you to Sony and Panasonic anymore, they're way behind and below.

We're talking of a possible Complete Low-Budget Indie Filmmaking Nirvana.

With the Scarlet this Paradise will happen anyway, but it won't be 100 %flawless... with a selectable lens platform - it will be.

The RED One\future Epic is an effective and real replacement for a 35mm film-camera. For me - it is a flawless tool. Yes, there is skew and other minor defects, but they're minor... defects that can actually be used as an effect even.

RED One is beyond Paradise.

You made that happen, Master Jim.

The Scarlet will be an effective and real replacement for a 16mm film camera.

You'll make that happen too.

It will be Paradise, even with the fixed lens.

But you can make it real flawless...

You can give us Nirvana with the sweet, sweet Scarlet.

She'll be a lady one day... and ladies like to change their clothes... and conquer us again and again with a new look... every day...

You can give our sweet Scarlet a nice wardrobe... and a credit card to go to Versace's :)...

She could even rent some real precious jewellry... for that very special night...

She deserves it...

... We deserve it...

Will you?... Please?

For Christmas? :)

Lens: Please make it changable or add at least a fixed 14x Zoom with T 1.6, so a proper DOF can be achived. But I guess the best option would be a PL Mount and a optional Kit Lens with Autofeatures (Focus). Or maybe different mounts - P/L, Nikon, Canon ? Crop Factor would not be the Problem.

I'm sure my previous post will be ignored or the sarcasm will be missed but a Nikon/Canon mount is not very practical at all. Even a 17mm lens would be roughly a 45mm or so. Maybe a C mount or such would be a better idea. There are some nice 16mm lenses out there.

scarlet conquer, Versace...what???

please make it 4 channel audio! I need that for a stereo-mic, a lavalier and occationally a boom. I it won't be in scarlet, I'd have to buy an expensive sounddevices 744T or so.

yeah, but Scarlet is so affordable you can buy two and be shooting with two cameras, so send the stereo mic to one cam and the other lines to the other camera.

I'm mostly kidding....i don't mean to be cavalier with someone else's money....

But since the Scarlet is half the price of even an HVX, it seems worth buying two of them. Extra coverage, backup cam, BTS cam, etc.......

How dumb is it to ask for a Nikon mount on Scarlet?

What would you shoot wide with? There are NO Nikon lenses designed for a 2/3" sensor.

What are you thinking?

Jim

Sorry Jim,

but there are 2/3 inch sensor cameras that can use Nikon or any other type of lenses

like a PL, PV, Nikon F, Canon EF, Leica-R, Leica-M, Zeiss-Contax, C-mount, etc...

There is the Silicon Imaging SI-2K camera that uses a single large 16:9 format

2/3” CMOS sensor that has IMS or Interchangeable Mount System made by P+S Technik.

LINK>>>

Have a look at NAB what P+S Technik can offer to RED.

2/3" is roughly has a crop factor of 3.93 compared with 35mm still camera film. so your looking more like 66mm for that 17mm lens.

sadly my 10mm sigma would still only be roughly 40mm so its a silly idea.

I just hope the lens goes really wide. I would rather have to buy a tele adapter than a wide adapter. I mainly shoot doc's and rarely go tight on shots with my style of shooting. no matter what cameras I chose, I ALWAYS have to budget in an extra $1k to century optics because I know I have to get a wide adapter too. it sucks.

I cant imagine not getting a scarlet but really hope its got a nice wide lens.
go wide!

@Jannard first Time I disagree with you.
OK Nikon does not make sense but an interchange lens why not.
Think about Si 2K or Iconix cam.
There are so many special applications.
Only one of them.
If I dont have synchronized high price zooms I select primes for 3D. Scarlet is so fine for 3D because you do not need in a lot of situations a special 3D rick to get the eyedistance.
But maybe you already consider a single cam 3D solution....just have a look to Korea
Anyhow. Scarlet is a bomb and I will consider it in future byside of our RED.

What about 4/3rds lenses?

Already designed for a smaller sensor than 35mm & the Zuikos are top notch.

Oh, & I already have some very nice ones! :)

An excellent idea and Zuiko said all of the 4/3 lenses are DESIGNED FOR A DIGITAL SINGLE SENSOR CAMERAS.

people would love the crop factor in wildlife, sports. remember the american cinematographer article 'bout the guy who shot a surfer movie with his super8 and how his canon 300mm tele on his beaulieu was the equivalent of a 1600mm lens?

Doesn't the SI2K cost 20,000+? Simple solution Jim, put a Scarlet badge on the Red One and sell that to all these people that want to swap their lenses. They want to pay you more for the ability to swap the lens, I say let them pay more. Let them pay 17,500.

I'd like to voice my opinion too. Scarlet is truly a dream cam come true. Like hello people, most of us were excited for a 2k camera or even 1080p full res.
Red surprises us with a 3k camera at under 3 thousand bucks. WTF. AMAZING

I think, a fixed lens is perfectly fine, i was being greedy like everyone else but thats human nature i guess. I think scarlet can add a couple of things, a longer zoom lens and a better looking body, say like an HVX or EX1. we want to be able to shoulder mount it without any shake unlike a super 8 camera which scarlet resembles now.

thats all, lets be realistic guys. Scarlet is an amazing camera and i think we should be realistic about the requests.

I recon the Nikkor 10.5 DX would be plenty wide enough even for 3/4", especially since that fisheye is DX optimized.

If you don't fanzy fisheye, and want to go rectilinear extreme wide angle, then there's also the 10-20 DX

Bingo.

Lets Have Two Version Fixed And Non Fixed Lens

Lets Have Two Version Fixed And Non Fixed Lens

Yes but what about the acessories and add on to use it. So it will be more than $3k with 4.8 LCD, etc. It will be more than $3k probably closer to $6K. It will be $3k for the owner's of Red One who already puchased accessories.

I would be willing to pay additional amount to the original $3k price if it had P+S Technik Interchangeable Mount System (IMS) as an option instead of the fix len. LETS HAVE TWO VERSION FIXED AND NON FIXED LENS

How many would like it to have the P+S Technik Interchangeable Mount System (IMS) version like I would!

Well I just joined this group, like many others who crowded the web yesterday to see the latest offering or perhaps "offspring" from Mr. Jannard. I am an old guy who has come from double system with an Arri BL to several flavours of Mag strip to TK76's and then Betacam and now a plethora wonderful light weight cameras. I currently shoot with a DVX100b and have been waiting for this announcement before buying my next camera.
As an avid DVXUser member and reader I have dropped by here several times to see what was up . Scarlet was the main reason I have not bought an HVX200 to this point and Jannard and his team have convinced me with this latest announcement that I made the right decision ...I will wait and see what they will offer in 2009.
I like the comparison to a 16mm camera that has been mentioned. Sort of a new age SR. Lens wise I would be happy with a fixed lens. I would be happier with a selection of affordable lenses made for the camera. Maybe an optional turret like the old day with 3 lenses?
Bravo Mr. Jannard!
