How dumb is it to ask for a Nikon mount on Scarlet?

What would you shoot wide with? There are NO Nikon lenses designed for a 2/3" sensor.

What are you thinking?

Jim

No problem. . . we won't mind if you bump up the size of the sensor! :greedy:

Personally the lens doesn't bother me at all. I definitely wouldn't use a Nikon mount on the Scarlet. I just don't want to lose my creativity to a fixed lens, even though I'm sure it'll be a fantastic lens.

But what other lens would you replace it with? For the kind of camera Scarlet competes against, a fixed lens is the only thing that makes sense.

Mr. Jannard make it a pinhole digital cinema camera please! That way a lot of folks here won't have to worry about fixed or interchangeable lenses or adapters. Please, please, please....

A bayonet adapter? Canon, JVC 2/3" made lenses? I was just hoping to use a couple of the Red primes. I wouldn't be able to with the scarlet.

A fixed lens does make sense... just with it falling under a professional camera, I usually don't visualize lens limitations. I'm still going to buy the camera regardless whether Red changes it or not. Just voicing my opinion of choice.

I'm gonna guess that the lens is tuned specifically to the sensor - so it will look pretty fantastic. And at 8x zoom - there'll probably be a lot of focal lengths to choose from.

lol: like i said. I'll still buy it. I'm just eagerly trying to get out of the fixed lens market. Fixed lenses take a big bite out of the cinematographer's work. Seeing this as a still camera is also intriguing. But I thought it was a professional camera? Last I checked I can change my lenses on my Canon 1Ds

The only plausible reason to ask is for super telephotos. Most lenses will have trouble achieving 3K resolution with just the center 25% (2/3" coverage area), but if you get a good specimen and stop it down, it would make a pretty light-weight wildlife kit.

Many have said that very thing. We get such sophisticated responses as "f*cking noobs". Apparently some people can't stand the thought of us "noobs" - who aren't rolling in cash - getting in on some awesome Red action.

I just want to say, thanks Jim. Thank you to you and your entire team for Scarlet. I'll be there on reservation day 1, with money in hand.

Century, Hoya and Kenko makes excellent Tele-attachment lenses.
You will get 3rd party one.

Two years ago I spent $4000 on a DVX-100B.

It had a fixed lens, too.

It was also standard def with a 4x3 chip. Recording to miniDV tape. NO RAW.

It does not fit in my pocket.

How can people complain about a **3k** Scarlet (with RAW!!!!) having a fixed lens for under $3000? Honestly, I've been on this board for about 14 hours (no joke) and it's the biggest gripe around. I don't understand.

Jim, you have a great camera (3 actually) and I'll be buying a Scarlet when available. (Maybe two or three.)

The only thing I would suggest is this, and maybe you're already planning on it:

How about selling refurbished RED ONE bodies, once people start to trade them in for the EPIC upgrade? (Unless you're planning on announcing a shoulder mounted camera in the $8-$9 thou range at next year's NAB for a 2010 release....filling in that middle area.)

Anyways, I'm thrilled with the Scarlet. A fine accomplishment. I can't wait.

I'm glad you pointed that out. But if they're anything like the Canon 1.4 teleconverters for SLR still cameras, I'll pass. I've already got a light and inexpensive 650mm 720p bush camera (XH-A1 downsampled), so I'll probably just use Scarlet at the focal lengths intended by RED.

Well, and not to be snarky or anything, but the Scarlet is essentially a 16mm run-and-gun machine or a crash-cam from what I can tell. Not to seem too plebeian, but how many of us actually use a wide variety of glass on our 16mm rigs? I know some people do, but my guess is that the vast majority of folks have the 10-100mm mounted pretty much all the time. For a doc guy used to working with an XTR or an SRII this will be a huge deal. I'll order a couple of them the day they're available for pre-order. I just won't make any hard and fast plans around the delivery date. ;-)

BTW, with the ability to overcrank up to 180 fps, the faster the glass, the better. T/2.8 is OK, but it would be really, really cool if that could come down to T/2. That extra stop would be pretty handy at 96 fps.

You know, half a dozen of these would be really cool for shooting live music. Probably light enough to fly on just about any kind of decent remote head or jib. Hey, that's a market Red hasn't entered yet. A Red Hot-Head or Techno-Jib might be cool. Heh...

These are affordable Swiss Army Knives. The price means you can afford as much coverage as you like. Congratulations, Red.

Jim,

If you guys end up sticking to the fixed lens spec, why not sell different versions with different fixed lenses? It's an interesting concept that the competition hasn't explored (yet) After all, why would you want to sell me one camera when you could sell me a couple ;)

Very cool cholo, good thinking.
I like it - if the whole lens options thing goes by the way (and who knows what will happen over the next few months) then this would be excellent.

edit: In fact i love it - great idea.

A canon 1Ds is $7K... and the performance of a system is what makes it professional. Does a Canon 1Ds (which I own) shoot 120 fps? I forgot.
