First of all ... Hello RED USERS!

we are actually a 3D specialFX company based in Munich Bavaria called K-Arts Creations But with the demand we started to make imagefilms as well. As filming was my passion early on, it was easy to adapt to a new path :-)

and now ... we are about to take part on this "RED" ride the world is talking about :-)

Like many we are jumping from the DSLR pony on the RED "Steed" and hope we can hold on!

The Scarlet would be the camera of our choice to start with. The modular system and the option to update the camera into the epic is quite apealing.

But i am still worried that i am missing ssomething.

- HDMI do they fry now with paralynx?
- HDR does it work like on the epic or not?
- should we wait till after NAB2014 ?

... any tips aside the awesome sticky posts?

Have a good day

Michael

HDR works the same, it cuts your frame rate in half cuz of the two exposure channels. On scarlet this is significant because it already has much less power then Epic, so when you use HDR you can't even do 4k at speed. Just something to keep in mind, HDR will work, but your going to be using it on 3k or less if you need 24p. waiting until after NAB would give you maybe more accessory items, but the ecosystem is well established with Red, so unless theres another price cut, or Scarlet Dragon is released or something along those lines at NAB, I don't think you will gain much from waiting. Tho for all I know, I am completely wrong on that and they start selling used Scarlets for 1k on the NAB floor lol? who knows...

I traded up from Scarlet to Epic 6 months ago, so everything I am stating is based on firmware from then, but it should still all apply.

Wait for NAB. Less than a month away.

Also, if you're a vfx company, I'd argue that it'd be worth saving up for Epic, since vfx can really use the additional resolution and frame rates. Maybe talk to Bjorn, he tends to know about these things.

thank you all for the feedback.

The framerates of the epic alone are a worth concideration for me alone.
Every customer wants slomo in our animations! So the filming should at least be able to!

.... but so much money :-)

cheers you guys

Mike
