Someone mentioned that most feature films are shot at 4k Res and then finished at 2k. Isnt it preferable and more economical to just shoot and finish at 2k?

Kinda... Most feature films you see in theaters are shot on analog film and then many go through a digital intermediate process at 2K resolution. 4K DI's will catch on soon but they are pretty expensive at the moment.

If your talking about shooting at 2K on the Red cameras, it might not get you the full DCI-compliant 2K sharpness you would like, its soft for 2K, hence why most people shoot at 4K and down convert to their desired deliverable resolution.

As far as the RED One is concerned, you get the best image quality when you shoot 4K. Nominal output resolution from the bayer pattern sensor is about 80% of the actual pixel count or about 3.2K if you want to start pointing the camera at resolution charts. So when you take 4K or 3K from the RED One and sample down to 2K, you get very sharp, highly detailed images. Shooting 3K or 2K records from a cropped area of the sensor, so it drastically changes your FOV. Essentially multiplying focal length and giving the appearance of deeper DOF. The RED One would make for a perfect acquisition format for a 3K DI process... But no one really does 3K DI as a standard.

Not exactly sure how this discussion got started under this thread's title... But Scarlet is going to be an excellent platform on which to shoot feature films. The S35mm Scarlet has more features than what was promised for the RED One when many of us put down our deposits. The 2/3" Scarlet should be excellent as well and should stomp all over the F900R and other 2/3" cameras that cost many times more.

Nice explanation, So what this means is that Scarlet would be perfect for 2k work since we're starting with a 3K or 2.4K image and finishing at 2k. This will provide for sharper looking images?

Might be time for some new basic FAQs about Bayer-pattern resolution, FOV, crop factors, etc, in relation to FF35, S35, Red One 35, 2/3, etc.

I'm very interested in the scarlet 2/3 for short films for festivals.
Just have no idea how much the mini primes will set me back.
Will it be a set ?
or can you get one lens individually?

(Ideally I would buy one lens fairly close to the specs of the lens on the fixed lens scarlet. Then buy more lens later when I can afford to.)

Just imagine the indie film scene (both short and feature)
once Scarlet 2/3 and the Red Ray 4k projector
is out there in abundance !!!!

then will the 2/3" scarlet 3K produce sharper image than RED ONE's 2K windowed??

2/3" Scarlet

2/3" Scarlet

then will the 2/3" scarlet 3K produce sharper image than RED ONE's 2K windowed??

Possibly yes. I say that because optics also plays a part in this of course.

And then RED ONE also shoots 3K at up to 60 fps too.. and in that case you would get a shallower DOF which might be more desirable.

I'm learning sutff all the time by looking at whatyou guys say and then hit wikipedia. So I think it would be awsome to have a Red glossary page with all kinds of technical words related to cameras, lenses so people can understand things easier. I have no idea about bayer patters. Would love to know. We could also just do you idea
