  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic-S the same nor not?

I personally agree with you, but Red itself is promoting the whole S35 4K thing, possibly to the detriment of Scarlet. And my point is about what I perceive to be the trend: a desire for larger sensors and a growing, if perhaps premature, desire for 4K. It's not about what you or I think may be enough, but overall changes in expectations. And let's face it, by the time Scarlet is released, if it's 2/3-inch 3K, it'll be nearly three years behind Red's original "early 2009" projection. And in that time, Jim Jannard has done quite a lot of hammering away at sub-4K formats.

True, but Red is pushing 4K now as a hedge against future obsolescence. Had the Scarlet been released in 2009 it -- and its 3K format -- would've had nearly 3 more years of useful life. Every delay has shortened that and moved it toward the ranks of the obsolescent. Even Sony and, gulp, possibly Canon (we'll see in November) are going 4K, and Panasonic has announce its AVC Ultra formats, up to 4:4:4, 12-bit, 4K, >400-Mbps eye-popping glory.

This is precisely why I'm calling it "Scarlet II"... and who know's when Scarlet II will be out.. I suspect competition will be all caught up by the time it is...

I'm cursed! Stuck in 4K and above realm. Hoping the Scarlet fixed or Interchangable is 4K at least. I'm even considering an R1MX if the Scarlet is 3K. We all know content is King, but 4K even at 80% 3200 Raw is undeniable. I really really hope Red doesn't go 3K. I'm sure the the camera will still be Great, but it feels like going backwards a bit.

We all know 4K screens are not the standard, but that's not the point. Losing res in post, will always happen. More than that Red is a digital revolution. I feel 4K is the bare minimum for being on par with film. 3K at 80% is 2400. I might as well stick with a DSLR, which I am not going to do. 4K Scarlet or I'm going to consider R1MX or Epix-X.

The exciting thing is nothing has been announced, and I have a feeling the are holding their hand for a very good reason. Which is perfectly fine for me.

Well, as far as the releasing Scarlet, we'll just have to wait and believe it'll be here sooner than later, and if I'd throw my whish for my new camera, that would be 4K, Full Frame, Fixed.

Scarlet seems like the digital 16mm, and from the Arri report on scanning film to digital they say to use 4k for 35mm and 3k for 16mm so it makes sense to me. 16mm blows up just fine to the big screen so will 3k I believe but then again that's not the prime delivery target for most people waiting for this camera.

Changing the fixed too much requires changing the lens and that would put the project back a whole lot so I'm not sure that will come to pass.

4k would be nice but consider the extra data to store, people are already worried about media costs this will only worsen that as well as faster computers as well (I think).

Imagine clean 16mm, I'd love to have my own little digital 16mm cam, i just hope Reed is the one to build it, though I'll take anything that comes but it has to be raw (r3d style), may seem picky but that's what I want!

Can we at least get some footage from the Scarlet? that would be awesome!!

Reading this thread makes me understand fully why RED had to change their openess policy. The only reason anyone is complaining is Red gave information pre release on what it was working on. DO ANY OF THE BIG COMPANIES DO THAT?

Its forgivable to be an Amateur filmaker but being an Amateur person is something people should avoid

The RED ONE is available as is the EPIC for hire IF your project is that important to the world. Me I'll wait patiently for the only camera company that is trying to give me a filmaking tool that all the other companies wouldn't think of giving away for less than $50,000+ even if they could.

Scarlet at 3K would be fine and superior than anything out there, considering that the r3d files are pretty thick, Alexa shoots at 2k, and I really don't think Canon or Nikon are going bigger than 1080 since HD is the standard size besides the compressed files are very thin. You can pull any film project off at 3K without a problem. R3D files at 3K at 800 ASA are awesome. But everything comes to your budget and timing. Work with what you got. I would buy an used R1MX which should be tons of them as soon as the EPIC-X programs are shipped and done. We are very happy with our R1MXs but we are going for the 2 Epic-X for one simple reason: SIZE and WEIGHT. 3D rigs become very heavy with 2 R1MX. If it wasn't for it i wouldn't go for anything else and keep them of ever. My 2 cents.

I really wish that the Scarlet comes out in fall, as I need a camera for my student films. Otherwise I might go with a 5D MKII or a AF101. By the way: Where can I find Red footage?

Electricjib from Scarletuser forum says it pretty well:

I'm still standing by what I said earlier. I'm waiting until the end of September to make a decision. If we hear nothing I have alternative plans not involving a camera. I could be wrong and the camera could be soon. The don't owe us anything. I'm aware of that. But digging themselves into a rabbit whole in the time where they should've been open was wrong. They're going to lose people including me in 10 days. I know 4 people personally who have made alternative choices and don't intend to buy the camera even if it does come out. I understand there obligations, but changing your whole company policy last minute on the Scarlet will be disastrous IMO.

Being open and honest we understood what was happening and changing, we could see the value in waiting. Now it's I wonder if it's a set back, I wonder if it's close, I wonder if... We don't know. I can understand RED's annoyance with the situation. Maybe it's closer than we all think. Though it surely doesn't sound like it. Multiple people out of Europe have hinted it being into next year...Feb/March.

I can understand Ted being annoyed but you can't uptalk a product forever and ever smoking the competition in price at 5 times the price of the Scarlet and just go silent on it. Your customer and a huge following has been waiting YEARS. Not Months YEARS. Go silent on Dragon, RedRay, Projection, and 3D. But don't put a following of customers in the dark. It really alienated everyone in the Epic S down to Scarlet market and really made them start questioning RED.

One day they're like, we believe we will be patient. The following day...forget it, what's the point. The choice RED has made will lose them customers even if the product is awesome. If Canon/Sony/Panasonic can release something with 4K with less work in post before the Scarlet is released, in that price range, Red will be dead in the water. It won't matter. They may have there issues, but it's all about timing and keeping your crowd.

What RED was doing we all understood. Honestly I feel somewhat betrayed and the money I've saved for 4 years is going to something entirely different in about 10 days. I really could care less if it comes out in 11. I love Jim and the RED team for what they're doing. But it clearly shows through that they want to appease the big market first and that we're last. It makes no sense to me. Many who can afford those cameras can afford an Epic M. Why put a clone of the Epic M out in an X(with slightly cheaper parts) when the M is already a steal for what it does. No I can't afford it. I'd love to some day, but the RED One, and M were already in place for those consumers.

I think this is where it would've been smart to hit the Scarleteers with a camera, grab the market and really dominate the sub 10-15K market. Most people in that range can't afford to buy, then sell, then buy again while losing money in the process. People will only wait so long, and after being open for nearly 4 years than closing the doors on your loyal followers that are passionate and as driven is RED is not inspiring. I applaud those who have more patience than I and more understanding than I.

But It's clear the top end of the market is more important to them. I just wish they'd stop the teasing if they're going to go quiet. IMO they have to release the Scarlet even if they don't see it in there plans. Going on for 4 years about it, than axeing it would be a bold and VERY dangerous move. It would hit personally with some and probably sway them in the future even.

RED you won't read this, you probably forgot we are here, but if you ever cruise by I want to be proven wrong, I will be back in the future, I understand you have a huge market in hollywood. But there are alot of pro and talented people under the 50K price range that would love, and have been waiting for you. Many are confused and trying to find a reason to hang on. I hope you give them one.
