  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic BUILD 4 BETA

Thanks Jarred.

Know what I'll be doing this weekend.

Merry Christmas to my RED family.

:))

Amazing update. I've spent a few days (and nights to render) speedramps in CS5.5. The time this will feature will save me!
timelaps and per-rec too. Love this Xmas present. A big thank you to the RED TEAM for this.
Edit: thanks to Rob to for the detailed write up, gave more time to spend with the kids;-)

I noticed the RAW mode glitch too. Using the magnify sometimes forced it to go back to normal.

Great Update! Thanks RED Team.

Couple of issues.

1. Raw view is displaying way too dark and with a very green colour cast.

2. Sleep mode only puts my monitor to sleep. The camera and fans keep humming away.

Amazing

Amazing

Thank you, RED.

Such a nice Christmas present. Not taken for granted at all. :)

Have you tried it? it does not work left to right.

Does not work for me either. Only flips the video upside/down. So this new function is only made for 3D rigs, not for mounting the LCD or EVF upside/down.

Or is there another mirror button somewhere?

Hi Bob, it has reverted to normal. Not sure if it was after a magnify or not.

Build 4 is finally here.. A whole whack of new goodies in this one.

Happy Holidays all...

Wow. Thanks a lot to the entire RED Team and especially the firmware guys (and those who instruct them what they are allowed to implement...).
The yellow features make the EPIC now the best timelapse camera I know of. And I have it already! Guess I make a lot of use using my motion control 3DS RAX rig to mount and move the EPIC for fantastic animated long exposure shots.

Have a nice christmas time and a deserved break!

Cheers,
Axel

PS: The only better X-mas present I can think of is a RED Projector announcement... Hehe :)

I know i will get fire for this,
No Resolution upgrade 4.5k, I just wanted a better image than R1 or a Frame Rate update on my scarlet, its like getting socks for Christmas.

I still love my camera:)

Seriously?

The smiley really makes it all better.

Not sure whats happening with yours but once I click on the flip and mirror buttons, all is good.

Does not work for me either. Only flips the video upside/down. So this new function is only made for 3D rigs, not for mounting the LCD or EVF upside/down.

Or is there another mirror button somewhere?

Without a horizontal flip option, pan right makes for a pan left on the screen. Am I missing something? Putting the monitor upside down isn't practical without a horizontal mirroring.

Only vertical flip of the video is available at the moment. We're awaiting a few more pieces to fall into place before we can enable horizontal mirror of the video in camera.
The UI can be both flipped and mirrored using the the flip/mirror checkbox.

great job Rob.

This is a seriously awesome update. Someone asked earlier in the thread, so here's an 'expanded' description for each improvement found in the build.

* Updated UI

The User Interface (UI) has been enhanced. If you've got a RED TOUCH 9" LCD, you'll notice the UI components are no longer scaled up or heavily pixelated. Everything is now drawn to scale for the monitor and it's much sharper and cleaner looking all around. Buttons have been cleaned up quite a bit. It's a great improvement over the original.

* Added Pre-Record

You can enable "pre-record" to start capturing footage before you even hit record. Found in SETTINGS > RECORDING > [PRE-RECORD]. Duration can be set to 10, 20, and 30 seconds. Once enabled, the DSMC will continuously capture a scratch cache of footage, prior to you hitting record. This way, you won't miss the start of a shot by being a little slow on the trigger.

* Added Time Lapse

Found in SETTINGS > RECORDING > [MODE] > "Recording Mode" [Internal Timelapse Timer]. The default, "continuous recording" locks your recording into the normal FPS/angle parameters. With Internal Timelapse Timer enabled, you can now set a 1 frame interval to capture every X-seconds. X-seconds can be set from a minimum of 1 second up to 3,599 seconds (1 frame captured every 60 minutes).

You can also set the recording to end at a predefined frame limit. SETTINGS > RECORDING > [X] Limit Recording To: [selectable].

* Added Record Ramp Varispeed

Found in SETTINGS > RECORDING > [MODE] > "Recording Mode" [Speed Ramp mode]. Next, set the target FPS and amount of time you want to allow the speed ramp to adjust. For example, 96 FPS and 5 seconds would ramp your capture speed from whatever you set the start at (24 FPS, for example) and in 5 seconds, the FPS speed will increase from 24 FPS to 96 FPS leading to a very smooth transition of FPS being captured.

Next, you'll want to assign a key to trigger the ramp. SETTINGS > SETUP > KEYS > [Key Mapping] or [Soft Keys]. You'll want to assign the key "Record: Start Speed Ramp" to either a hard key or a screen/touch 'soft' key (or both for convenience).

You can only ramp speed once. So if you default your FPS to 24 and ramp up to 96, once you hit record, you'll be capturing at 24 FPS. Now trigger the "Record: Start Speed Ramp" key and, at the interval you defined, FPS will increase to 96. It will then stay at 96 FPS until you stop recording.

* Added Vertical Monitor Flip

Found in SETTINGS > DISPLAY > MONITOR CONTROL > and then [X] Flip/Mirror UI and [X] Flip Video. With both enabled, you'll flip the UI and the video upside down on your monitors. This doesn't change how your footage is captured -- only how you interface with your footage on camera via monitors. This is useful for more unusual mounting positions of the touch screens, including a horizontal folded out option that treats the screen more like a flat touch surface.

* Added Vertical and Horizontal UI Flip/Mirror

See above.

* Added Custom Overlay

Found in SETTINGS > DISPLAY > MONITOR CONTROL > OVERLAY. User-definable UI overlays you can figure to personalize and move things around. There are also presets installed including options for 3D controls. Overlays can be stored on the camera or transferred to SSD and stored on computers or copied from camera-to-camera. You can create overlays directly within the DSMC UI.

* Added Power Save Modes

Found in POWER > [POWER SAVE]. Three settings you can define; (1) Low Power Preview, (2) Sleep, (3) Auto Shutdown for when the camera is not in use.

* Added User selectable 1:1 zoom

1:1 pixel zoom for concise focusing.

* Added Selectable LCD Frequency

Greater support for LCD monitoring. Found in SETTINGS > DISPLAY > MONITOR CONTROL and then "Frequency" dependencies for each monitoring option (Brain LCD, Brain EVF, etc).

* Added Import/Export user cal maps

Found in SETTINGS > MAINTENANCE > CALIBRATION > "Current CalMap" drop-down. Default is factory and this can now be changed to "user HS". User-selectable calibration maps for camera settings.

* Added Calibration warnings for exposure and temperature

Self-explanatory. If calibrations are out-of-sync with expected exposure and temperature maps, you'll get a warning to adjust calibration.

* Added Luma Ramp Test Pattern

Found in SETTINGS > DISPLAY > TEST SIGNALS > [LUMA RAMP]. A luma ramp (black to white pattern) will display.

* Added Pro IO and Monitor Audio Mixer

Found in AUDIO. Additional tools for adjusting the Pro IO (if connected) and monitoring audio mix.

* Added internal frame summing for long exposures

Trent posted an explanation of this here:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...BUILD-4-BETA&p=1124041&viewfull=1#post1124041
To enable long exposures:

- Goto: Settings->Recording->Frame Processing
- Set Frame Processing Mode to "Frame Summing"
- Chose the number of Frames to Process (this will act as a divider on the framerate).

For example, if you chose 16 frames in summing mode, then you can set your framerate down to 1/16.15FPS (or 16.15 seconds per frame). Your exposure time still needs to be set. Or more precisely, you still have control over your exposure time for each frame that is summed to create the long exposure. Choosing a full exposure is like a traditional long exposure. However you can chose a smaller exposure time for effect if you like. In this mode you are previewing before the summing so expose accordingly. As soon as you hit record you will see the summed exposure.

* Added internal frame averaging capability (advanced noise reduction)

Found in SETTINGS > RECORDING > [FRAME PROCESSING]. You can now set the drop-down from "No Frame Processing" to "Frame Summing" (long exposures, see above) or "Frame Averaging" (noise reduction). Still testing this and looking forward to posting results. Sounds awesome.

* Added REDmote Auto Pairing

Shutdown and reboot DSMC and REDmote and both will now auto-pair, once previously synchronized.

* Added +1 Module Support

Jarred has previously posted the +1 Module will now ship in february. This module will allow you to run two RED Touch monitors (a 9" and a 5" for example), or a Touch with an EVF, etc.

* Added pluge pattern to SMPTE bars

Found in SETTINGS > DISPLAY > TEST SIGNALS.

* Separate Audio Channel Setup

Found in AUDIO.

* Calibration capture speed-up

Black calibration takes approximately 10-12 minutes now. An improvement of around 60%. Keep in mind, temperatures cause things to drift and re-calibration is required.

* Improved RAW metering

Found in SETTINGS > DISPLAY > TOOLS > then "RAW" button. Picture looks cleaner but not sure what else has changed here.

* Enhanced AF

Found in FOCUS > [X] ENHANCED A/F with selectable monitor, monitor frequency, and "Confirm Style". Sounds great, but I've got no idea as to what this actually does in practice. Once enabled, the output you defined for "Enhanced A/F" is no longer controllable under SETTINGS > DISPLAY > MONITOR CONTROL. Message says, "This monitor is being used for Enhanced Auto Focus". The device you set Enhanced A/F to run on displays a clean picture. I can't tell what else this feature does or is supposed to do. I've tried enabling this with a number of non-touch monitors -- is a second RED Touch required (and thus a Pro I/O or a +1 Module)?

* Feature Request

I'd love the ability to set a 1:1 spot focus to stay continuously enabled across a second monitor (RED Touch or HDMI/SDI monitor out). Then we could have a small monitor with the 1:1 focus enabled on that monitor alone, while we navigate menus and capture with full preview on our main.

I meant you can only ramp once, you can set it up to ramp from 100FPS->24FPS if you chose.
What you cannot do is from 24FPS -> 100FPS -> 24FPS.

There will be options in the future for multiple ramp targets while recording.

It's shiity, but it's a test! Couldn't wait to set something up!
