  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Dragon...

6K because 8K standard already exists (even prototype cameras) - over next 10-15 years 8K will be widely accepted in filmmaking and television. RED will lead us to that era :) Sure they already have some prototypes in the lab.

I pray RED's SSD's and Hard drives get cheaper when this happens...

This old image has 9k listed. I saw another one around the same time back before epic was released, and it had this big mutha sensor on it. I was guessing at the time that it was their side by side lens 3D rig they were working on.

ill find the pic.

Well that didn't take me long at all, good old google image search. How seriously huge is that sensor? Is it to scale?..?.? Gotta be 30k at least!

If the REDRAY is 4k, and the best theater is 4k, Than why all the crazy fuss to go 6K? Ok...so you can compare it to 65mm film!! AWESOME!! This reminds me of the "my dick is bigger than your dick" argument. 4.5K , 5K 6K OR 8K....Unless your Peter Jackson how many of us are shooting content that will see an IMAX. I see people spending their life savings on the upgrade but are you actually shooting for clients that require it? Ok, the flip side to this may be...its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it right!.....thats true, but thats gonna cost a fortune! If we keep renting our cameras so damn cheap it will take years to pay the upgrade off instead of months.....hey thats an idea, why dont we all start raising our prices for rental or as a DP back to the way it was so we can afford this Dragon...LOL JUST A THOUGHT ;)

It's all about oversampling.

6k oversampling to a 4K finish will look "perfect" I imagine. 5K to 4K or 5KHD to 1080p both look quite spectacular already when shot well.

If people thought like that, we would have been stuck at 1080p. :)

The 617 Epic was announced as 28K - so Your guess was close enough...
This is a beauty I am going to retire with shooting landscapes...
:reddevil:

Supposed the sensor upgrades become available after I purchase the camera.

What is happening when someone from EU wants to upgrade.
The camera has to be shipped back I guess, will there be any tax issue?
Or is there a service center in Europe?

Has there been past experience with that?
Thanks.

Cheers

All European sales and service is handled by RED UK based out of Pinewood Studios. No tax issues what so ever...

Don't forget that thing called available light, and just how incredibly beautiful it can be in the right hands. And consider the fact that these sensors are beginning to give us the same flexibility as our still's counterparts have had and have been exploiting for some time now. Available light in cinema was pretty much restricted to a very narrow set of parameters due to the response of film stocks locked in @ 24fps. Some of the most beautiful images in history have been made with available light. This is not to say that the importance of lighting craft will diminish, but it really is a new era when we have the opportunity to use any quality of available light in full, or as a point of departure.

Thanks Peter! Ok, thats great.
Sorry, I realize I was a little off topic on this thread but for us EU folks such things as turnaround time and handling can be quite important.

A bit harsh, don't you think? If you checked out Gunliek's threads, he shoots in available light. He shoots deliberately. Let the shadows fall where they may. I believe he was saying that we sometimes shoot neutrally cause we are scared like bitches. I do it all the time, cause I suck. I am a bit insecure, but I feel that in time, once I get to know the lenses and Red system, I will get a touch more confident and not think too much about fixing in post. But for now.... Thank god for Redcode Raw, High DR and fixing in post. Great learning for me.

My point wasn't that Gunleik doesn't use available light to shoot. And no offense directed at you Gunleik, I was just pushing back against the notion that large dynamic range and high sensitivity means you aren't lighting and or aren't a good cinematographer who can use their tools.

I think we can all agree that only having 50D film stock would be a workable challenge for a good DP--but an unnecessary burden on your electrical and grip department. High sensitivity, large dynamic range and high contrast pleasing images are not mutually exclusive. And I would say a good bit of laziness isn't a bad thing. If laziness means focusing on the image instead of the tools then all the better. I would rather a DP knows how to beautifully light a scene than properly expose one. The former is a far more difficult skill than the latter even though proper exposure isn't always easy.

We have a great deal of aesthetic characteristics as artists we can tweak. Often we have to sacrifice something in exchange for another. Better tools free our creativity and should be welcomed.

Of course it makes sense that we will upgrade EPICs to the Dragon sensor before Scarlets. However, we are considering how to upgrade Scarlets to the Dragon.

There are several boards that need to be changed so the upgrade for Scarlet may be a bit more expensive than the upgrade to EPIC..

We are always thinking about our customers... just so you know.

Jim

Jim, have you thought about making the Scarlet with dragon sensor, and accepting trade ins of the old Scarlet for resale, instead? Might be better.
