Has anyone heard about any possible pricing schemes for Scarlet accessories/modules? I saw the estimated prices of the Epic/Scarlet accessories in the Oct. announcements, but was wondering if anyone thinks RED might lower the prices once enough Scarlets start shipping. I know since RED doesn't produce a large volume of accessories and REDS, that the accessory prices would naturally reflect that. But since RED will probably be selling many more Scarlets, shouldn't it make since for them to lower the prices? Or offer packages at reduced prices? From what I'm seeing, if someone wanted to buy only the absolutely necessary modules needed to operate a fixed Scarlet, they would need to buy a $900 LCD (assuming no integrated lcd is included), a $550 Redmote, and a $1250 battery module. I'm assuming you can use other CF cards, not from RED. I know the prices will probably change a little, but does this sound right? To me it doesn't, when you add that up it's $5,700 for the whole package, assuming the fixed stays around 3k. I heard in recent interviews that RED was going to offer an operational Scarlet package, for the fixed at least, that would top out somewhere around $3,700. So my questions here is: what will that extra $700 include? And will a similar package be offered for the Scarlet cinema? When you compare the $2,700 with the $700 option, it's obvious the latter is more desirable. I know it might be a little early asking these questions, before Nov. 30th, but if anyone can help clear away a little of this confusion for me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

You have misunderstood.
Minimum addition to Brain w/fixed lens;
LCD or other viewfinder
Side CF module
Side handle (contains battery and all camera controls).

I might be wrong on this but, the oct. announcement said the side handle was going to be like $1000. While I think you can access all the basic controls with that, I don't know how much battery capacity you get with it. Either way, the costs should be the same for a side handle and for a battery module + a redmote, which is about $1000. I don't know how the handle would be charged, except through the charger module, which you'd have to buy for the battery module anyways. And doesn't the Scarlet have a slot for a CF card?

Though, I can see how the handle would make handheld shots easier.

I thought the fixed Scarlet works straight out of the box and includes a small LCD.

I guess we're all find out the details on the 30th.

The 'fixed Scarlet' (which used to be $3000) just comes with the brain. The Scarlet Kit (which was $3750) is what you're probably thinking of, which was going to be a bare-bones package (including some kind of display device, battery and media - most likely the side handle and a small LCD). But we haven't heard any word about that package since the prices were taken down off the RED website. I think they will probably have the kit, but looking at the updated prices for the accessories they've posted, and since Jim said there would be a 'mild price rise', I think it will be more like $4,200 to $4,500.

But as you say, all should be revealed on the 30th!

Battery Module is $1250. REDmote is $500

That's almost double the Side Handles $950 price tag.

Why don't we wait a couple more weeks, then we can all start discussing price a little more knowledgeably.

Don't forget (on the 8x fixed) in exchange for the 'mild price increase' we'll also be getting:

1. Increased REDCODE data rates
2. New FLUT Color, Gamma and Sensitivity Science. Now same as EPIC.
3. More extensive modular system integration.
4. "Touch Focus Tracking" with electronic lens mounts and RED touchscreen LCD's (Scarlet 2/3" Interchangeable and 8x Fixed)
5. Two independent microphone level channels, balanced input circuits, 48V Phantom Power, digitized at 24-bit 48KHz.
6. GigaBit Ethernet port
7. Scaled 1080P at 60fps

"New FLUT Color, Gamma and Sensitivity Science. Now same as EPIC" featured on the 8x fixed. This is very impressive! Barring any disasters, I plan to have one in my hands by next November! :-)

I'd just go with the side handle easily, if you didn't have to buy a charger or power cables separately. But, I'm sure RED will mention some type of well functioning package on Nov. 30th for the Scarlet, that includes everything someone would need to start shooting right away at a decent price. So I'll just vacate the forum until then, because it just seems pointless to try and figure anything out now, when almost none of the specs are solid yet.

What do people consider a mild increase on $3750.00.... Mild equals 5 to 15 % = $190 to $562, therefore $4000 to $4250 would be considered mild. 20% = $750 which is getting steep, anything over that could not reasonably considered mild. So lm hoping about $4200 would be a good price.

Yeah but that doesn't really matter if it costs a adsorbent amount of money to have it work properly.

Anyone from RED able to say how the brains heating vent will perform with a rain cover on the camera? Are RED likely to produce fitted rain covers for SCARLET/EPIC or is it likely to be third parties only?

I believe I read a post from Jim concerning a similar issue of venting when in underwater housing. Jim said it shouldn't be a problem and that the vent is only there when you start shooting at high frame rates for a while. I'm not sure where that quote is though...

cheers guys. I live in England so a rain cover is a must but I'm also looking to protect the camera in case some of the locations I shoot in are dusty or humid.

The Sony Z7U, at B&H Photo, is currently selling for $5,279.00. Even if a completely outfitted Scarlet 8x fixed comes close to this, think of the value and features/capabilities we're getting (of course I say this before specs, prices and tests have been released). :-)

+1

I don't get why people act like RED is ripping them off when they modify specs and pricing. For the price, it still blows away any other video camera (don't even bring up VDSLRs; VDSLRs = Flip Mino HD + 35mm Adapter).
