So when my business partner and I were lookin into investing in our camera, we were on the fence between Scarlet and Epic. While we had to ability to get a Scarlet, getting an epic just wasnt possible at the time. We are always really against settling with everything that we do so we didnt really know how we would feel about the Scarlet, and if it would be capable of getting the same great images as the Epic. Well lemme tell ya, after our first real detailed shoot last night, we are pretty freaking stoked. Yeah the high frame rates would be great for slow motion for music videos and things, but for a project needing that, we could simply rent an epic for a day to get what we need. I wanted to post this in case there is anyone out there holding off on a Scarlet because of reservations about quality. When we were doing research, it was really hard to find excellent scarlet footage I guess because people who generally go with a Scarlet arent able to have the production value of Companies that purchase epic.. or maybe they just dont post online haha. Anyway here is a screen grab from a shot we will be using as we are compiling our company reel this spring. You guys will be seeing more from Ophion Films, and we are very proud to be a part of the RED family.

dont know why it isnt inserting image but here is the link

Cheers!

Beautiful frame grab. I think all Scarlet owners can succumb to some Epic jealousy from time to time, but when ever I use my camera I'm astounded at the quality I can just pick up and shoot with.

totally agree. especially when we are like, this would look great in super slomo! but i guess theres always twixtor. thanks btw!

Really makes me happy to hear people happy with their purchases with RED I too was going to buy a scarlet but decided to take a leap of faith and get an epic I barely have enough for it but FUCK IT lol. There's so much hate about the red with people saying its unreliable etc..but I have many friends who haven't had a single issue yet. And I've had no problem editing any footage from it either. And yes there is a lot of weak tagged scarlet/epic videos on Vimeo/YouTube most of the good stuff doesn't tag the camera info :)

welcome to Scarlet-love. Bought mine the first (crazy) night RED offered them, never looked back. Prob last pro camera I will ever (need to) own.

Epic is better choice, and especially after the price drop.

Well here comes the cold bucket of water :yesnod: ---- Of course Epic is a better choice, but perhaps for some of us $11K additional expense is not an option. Its OK for Scarlet users to be happy with their camera - nothing wrong with that.

PS: YOU know what's better than Aston Martin SP9................. and Aston Marting SP10!! LOL

Here are some stills from my recent shoot on a scarlet. Click on them for full res.

A very well thought out and smart move Caleb! The images between the two are virtually identical, they intercut perfectly, and as far as I'm concerned, indistinguishable under normal conditions. I have a couple of Epics and later picked up a Scarlet for the bulk of my personal stuff, lens tests and as a third camera. I have yet needed to really exploit high frame rates since most of my shooting is @ normal speed, and am quickly realizing that I could have saved a lot more money had I been more rational, but I'm not lol. Scarlet is certainly up to the task and in the right hands, create world class images. The days of being limited by equipment costs and access are coming to an end, at least for rational people, lol.

GREAT shots Bob! Especially love the top one with all the detail and colour. :)

Can't understand the recent moaning about Scarlet here, especially the "it's not an EPIC" or "I would have been better off with a RED One".

As far in relation to the Red One goes, the scarlet is smaller and lighter and requires less expensive tripods/support, it has more compression settings so that you can go much lighter on the compression if you need to. The accessories are all compatible with the EPIC and EPIC mono so you can just swap out the body and you are good to go. You have more choices for lens mounts and hence lenses. You can use an external recorder to record on off the shelf ssd's to pro-res or Dnx-HD.

In relation to the EPIC, it is much cheaper, there is an upgrade path to EPIC by just swapping the bodies out and if you rent an EPIC all your equipment will be compatible. You also won't switch to high speed mode and then forget to put the compression back to your preferred settings for shooting normally. You get an EPIC less a few high end features, the most notable one being high speed, but how often do you really shoot high speed? It's the perfect B camera when you do upgrade to an EPIC.

I actually think the scarlets much more of a bargain than an EPIC is! :)

Scarlet is perfect for TV. Epic for cinema.

The majority of my work is in TV & I suspect the majority on this forum ...the question I keep asking myself is do I really need 5k or Dragon for SD/HD broadcast ?

It appears others are asking this very same question & not from a price or quality perspective either. .......

P.S. Gunleik your avatar pic looks a lot more youthful than I remember ; )

I would argue scarlet is just as good for cinema as well...maybe slightly softer than the epic but the R1 has shot many a gorgeous film and we are dealing with the same resolution with better compression than that

We definitely have Epic on the mind for the future, especially after the drop. Just saying that we have been really stoked with what weve gotten so far. Would we take an epic? Hell yeah, but for now we can rock a few high end pro jobs confidently with our scarlet while we save our pennies. :)
