  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Knowing the roundabout speed of the anticipated 8X lens, can anyone think of any current cameras/lenses that would have the approximate DOF characteristics that we might expect from the 8X?

Could we expect this lens to perform better than what we might get from an HPX170 or EX1 (in terms of DOF or generally)?

Sorry if this has been addressed in previous lens post. Please redirect me if necessary. Thanks.

Shoot with a 7d or t2i keeping the aperture at f5.6 on focal lengths 18 - 144mm.
This should approximate the dof when shooting with a 2/3 fixed with aperture wide open
edit:
iso/noise/dr etc will of course be no comparison at all, above mentioned is for dof only

I've been trying some DOF calculators out there and it seems that the perceived DOF between 2/3s and 4/3s are separated by 1 and 2/3 stops for any given lens with the same FOV in both formats and equal focal plane to subject distance.

This means that Scarlet will have the same DOF as a Panasonic AF-100 for an equal camera to subject distance if your shooting like this:

Scarlet - 13mm (50mm FF equivalent to 2/3s) @ f/2.8
AF-100 - 25mm (50mm FF equivalent to 4/3s) @ f/4.8

Can anyone verify (or rectify) this for me?

I believe this is exactly correct.

DOF between 2/3s and 4/3s are separated by 1 and 2/3 stops
The difference should be exactly 2 stops (assuming 4/3 is really twice the size of 2/3).

I think people in general are really underestimating how shallow we'll be able to get the DOF on the 8x.

I've worked with some Panny 2/3 cams and the DOF was definetly shallow enough when i wanted it to be. to me its really the perfect sensor size for an "all purpose" camera.

2/3" optics

2/3" optics

Yes, lets not forget that a number of features have been shot on 2/3", so in addition to TV / commercial work, it's a flexible format for movies too.

I was just playing around with my Nikon D5000 at f5.6 (which should be roughly the same as fixed Scarlet, wide open). The DOF is pretty good, especially if you can zoom out and then compose your shot.

Often, these hurdles can sometimes lead to more creative thinking.

To all the people obsess about this DOF topic a lot. (And I do a bit myself.) There are DOF calculators you can play with on the web; here is one: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html (chosen somewhat arbitrarily). One caution in using them when comparing different sensor sizes is to be sure to adjust the lens appropriately to maintain a consistent composition between the two. Otherwise, the results are misleading. Have fun. It is revealing. And encouraging for those of us eagerly awaiting the 2/3" Scarlet.

... or just remember that its 2.5 stops difference between 2/3 and
s35/aps-x/nikon-dx

the scale in half stop increments
f1.4, f1.8, f2, f2.4, f2.8, f3.5, f4, f4.5, f5.6 ... etc

so dof on scarlet fixed at f2.4 approximates an s35/aps-c/nikon-dx at f5.6
similarly a 2/3 interchangeable at f1.5 will approximate an s35/aps-c/nikon-dx at f3.5

edit:
remember to also multiply the focal length by 2.5 as well
if scarlet fixed lens at its widest would be around 7mm is about 18mm on s35/aps-c/nikon-dx

Interesting but I can't seem to get this particular DOF calculator to agree with your figures. Comparing 2/3" sensor with a 7D, with the appropriate multipliers - focal length difference of 2.5 and 2.5 stops - doesn't give anything close to the same DOF. I guess the calculator could be bogus... in any case, somebody's math isn't working out. :undecided:

Still investigating...

LOL
I'm pretty sure a RED head would correct me in the blink of an eye if I was wrong.
We are speaking on REDUSER.net after all.
