  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet #81 1600 ISO Test

Well if you guys enjoy the tests, i will keep them coming.

Suggestions?

looking great, by the way, and thanks for sharing. For those of us waiting, it gives us something to work with and time to get used to Scarlet taste.

Impressive stuff, can't wait to try it with mine also. Hey Nuno! Are you from where I think you are?

24p hdrx, maibe:)
and 25p without hdrx. Both movement, a few seconds.
also I would like to see the same shot at 5k and at 4k, same glass, no movement necessary.

Just going through what hasn't been done yet. If any of this or other, would be great.

yes Antonio, I think I am from there, but never for long. Just back sometimes, to see how it goes.Sometimes I go to. Too cryptic? :)

Running an ISO ramp test is maybe good for learning!
But you'll just bring home a set of identical RAW exposures with different metadata.
Shooting charts is nice to verify stuff like that. :)

If the only thing you change is in-cam ISO, the exposure will be identical.

If you start to stop down your lens to compensate for higher ISO, OTOH, you will of course get more and more underexposed images...

This image is exposed at 800, you still call it a 1600 ISO test :) Means you've in practical terms understood how it works.

That said. I think this image looks best at 320/5600... That's where I'd have liked to start a grade on this... Some blacks are better off left as blacks IMHO.

As to the C300 "comparison", I am sure it can see in the dark, which is impressive. But still not the feature which is deciding for me, as I usually shoot with lights.
I am very much looking foreward to shoot it side by side the Epic, not at least because all the (web) images I have seen from it this far, have som serious tonality issues.
But those could be web-introduced of course. Or be codec related.

Thanks for the R3D ! Good scene, very nicely done !

Unfortunately on this PNG screen capture, noise is there...a colored/video noise. :(

Keep in mind that unlike video cameras, Red cameras don't do any processing in-camera beyond some light compression. Every other video camera does an in-camera noise reduction process, so to really compare you need to run the Red through some noise reduction in post. Fortunately because the footage isn't heavily compressed, there's a lot of information for noise reduction plugins to work with. I recommend Neat Video...I worked with some MX footage recently that had to be pushed to 3200 ISO, but after running it through Neat Video the noise was completely eliminated except for a slight hint in the shadow areas. There is a certain amount of detail loss, but fortunately we're dealing with 4k so once it gets scaled down to 1080p it still ends up with much more detailed than other cameras.

-City at night wide shot at various ISO's and lenses
-An alley shot with only a few bright spots

No post noise reduction or addition just the RAW files please

Here's my treatment to the still btw

No problem Andrew, and everyone else who appreciates them.

As long as you guys are enjoying them, I will try my absolute hardest to keep the tests coming.

And let's all remember, that I and my dps and gaffers are all still learning. Im sure we could have made every shot look a little bit better and now we know how.

Just think of what a very very skilled cinematographer could do.

michael, who's the guy lighting the cigar. He really does look like decaprio in the wider shot.... i can't get over it.lol

To anyone unfamiliar with the Red Camera Dicaprio test, here you go

Shot by David Fincher on a RED ONE w/ Mysterium-X sensor at ISO 2000 and a Master Prime at T 1.3. Key light is only a match.
