  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can anyone confirm if you can record full frame 5k with the HyperDeck through SDI?

Anyone have any footage shot with scarlet recorded through Hyperdeck.

When your doing LIVE recording with the Hyperdeck do you need to be recording to the RED SSD?

I haven't used it on a job but I did tests with my Scarlet and Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 and it seemed to work well. If you use a clean feed from your HD-SDI/HDMI to your Hyperdeck and record using the Hyperdeck's record button you just need to make sure lookaround is on and all markers and masks are turned off so the image the hyperdeck is getting is completely clean. I didnt test triggering using the camera's record button, but as Bob mentioned you should be able to but you probably just need to make sure you turn on the external recorder option so it will send the record signal without having a REDMAG mounted.

Also its worth noting that you will always be recording 16:9, so its best to set the camera to 4kHD if you want a 16:9 image, but you will use more sensor area if you set the camera to 4k, but it will have letterboxing since the 5k sensor area you are recording is 1.9:1 aspect ratio

I just bought the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, an SSD dock and an SSD. Unfortunately I bought the wrong BMD SDI cable. I'm going to B&H tomorrow to pick up the right one. I'll have an answer for you then on my end.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but does this mean you can record full 5K material to the hyper deck ssd? Would this be a cheaper alternative for those who do not need RAW but still want 5K?

So should we just set to 4k for best practice if I were to assume that more sensor area = less noise/better quality?

basically I'd say if you are shooting 16:9 content you should use 4kHD/5kHD because once you crop a 16:9 image out of the 5k 1.9:1 image you won't be gaining anything. If you are shooting any aspect ratio wider than 16:9, you should use 4k/5k since you'll get a little more horizontal field of view and sensor area and your 16:9 deliverables would have to be letterboxed anyway. Its 1080p, so you don't have resolution to spare like RAW, so you have to choose. It's not that complicated though, <=16:9 set it at 4kHD, >16:9 use 5k.

Thanks for these tips. I'm thinking about picking up one of these - the things that are making me hesitate are that I heard it's a pain to connect to a Mac because of the drive formatting it uses, and also because I kind of think (or hope) that one day they will bring an update to Scarlet that lets you record a 1080p full sensor output, and then I'd have no use for it.

I can confirm that you can use the full 5k sensor. Obviously it will record to 1080p. It's actually a bit smaller in terms of resolution when you compare to setting the Scarlet in 4k because of the aspect ratio difference. I'll post some footage within the week if I get the chance. Waiting on my thunderbolt SSD adapter.

Answer to Question 2:
You do not need to be recording to the Red SSD. Make sure your HS-SDI output is set to clean so you don't record any overlays. Problem w/ that is the fan won't quiet down when you just record with the Hyperdeck. Looking through the settings if there's a workaround.

If the HyperDeck will accept a trigger signal thru the SDI from the camera, then if you have programmed lower fan speeds in the REC mode of the camera, these should engage when you REC to the HyperDeck using the camera's REC button. I have a PIX240 recorder and this works just fine.

It uses HFS+ and exFAT right?

All you need is an SSD dock and your there.

I have the Hyper Deck Shuttle 2 since a week.
It works with the scarlet. It accepts the trigger signal over SDI, to start and stop recording.
If you set the camera to external recording only you can record without RED mag.
Setting the camera to 4kHD and look around gives you the max size sensor and 1080 size recording, without letter box at up to 30 fps on the HDS.

Note, it does not use same name convention as red files on RED mag.
I noticed very small speed ramps on beginning end of each recorded clip, similar to film cameras getting up to speed.
Also I have not found a way to play back files with the HDS that was not recorded on it. That is not mentioned on the BMG site and to me was very disappointing.
I was hopping to be able to use it as playback device of edits in ProRes for presentation.
Also recording ProRes gives me errors trying to load them into After Effects. Re-outputing the file out of Quicktime fixes the problem,
but is time consuming and defeats the purpose.

Finally got the correct cable today. For those of you living near B&H, get the LAIRD 3G SDI DIN 1.0/2.3 to BNC cable. The description should say works for RED One, but it works on my Scarlet. The look-around does work and I like the look of 4k with the letterboxing, plus it gives you a slightly wider view. The ProRes Quality is great. Now I just have to figure out how to mount this w/o making my rig look like a big mess.
