  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm looking to possibly record 3k in 1-2 hour chunks with the Scarlet Fixed. From what I've read, the choices are cf cards or (maybe) HDMI out to a 3rd party recorder. I'm trying to understand what say 2 hours of 3k in gigabytes is going to take up in file size and what (economical-ha ha) options I might have for recording 2 hours worth of material.

Is there another module that will work with the fixed module? Are there CF cards large enough for 2 hours? etc. Most of the info I've found is for Red One-obviously-because the scarlets aren't out yet. But any sense of how this all works would help. Thanks.

Last we heard, the CF modules are dead in favor of something better. We're waiting on an announcement of what that might be.

Modules for the Epic can be used with the Scarlet fixed; the 1.8" SSD module is listed as $1500 here: Scarlet 2/3"

Where exactly does this information come from? I have been pretty observant of the information shared on this forum and this is certainly news to me.

Jarred Land:

As for 64GB compact flash cards.. forget about them. Yesterday's news. We are jumping forward a few steps.

RED isn't moving forward with additional flash storage, though I suppose it's possible they'll keep selling the 16GB cards and module for Epic/Scarlet, even though they're not producing the 64GB cards. I'm not sure how we'll that'll work, though, since the data rates on Epic are so much higher; the 64GB cards were pretty much a necessity.

Last I heard, RED was skipping 32G CF cards and going right to the development of 64G cards. That's as big as it gets right now and, no, they probably won't be able to hold 2 hours of footage, even at 3K and a "reasonable" REDcode. If you want to play around with the math, current REDcode 28 is 28 MB/sec, RC 36 is 36 MB/sec, and RC 42 is... well, you get the idea. Those are at 4K so you can adjust for Scarlet's 3K - and perhaps a more compressed (yet to be revealed) REDcode, if you are willing to give up some amount of quality. Since we don't have exact specs and nothing is final, I'd say the best you can do is get out your calculator and play around. In any case, 2 hours of shooting is likely to run well over a hundred gigs under even the best of scenarios so a hard drive is probably going to be your best option.

Jarred explicitly said they're skipping 64GB CF cards too. I definitely got the strong impression that CF cards were being moved into the "legacy" column. I took that to mean it wouldn't be part of Epic, except as a way to allow older media to still function on the new cameras. (So technically, they'll still be a CF module, but it won't be the "preferred" recording medium for Epic going forward.)

RED-drives are also dead, except for back orders -- again, to be replaced by some unspecified recording medium that Jarred seems to think will make us forget all about CF cards and RED-drives. Since the new recording media also works with RED One, I expect CF cards to be phased out soon too.

I blinked and missed that thread. Thanks for citing it. I have to admit to being confused. Jarred didn't say CF cards were necessarily out, but it isn't clear and seems weird that they would just go to... what, 256G cards? And without drives or cards, what are we left with? SSDs are, at present, very pricey and are we to be left with only one option? I am no storage expert so I ask, will SD cards be an option? Have to admit, i am at a loss for knowing what other storage options are out there. Bubble memory devices?? People have talked about streaming the data to an outboard medium but that still has limitations for many situations.

As far as the OP's question - I guess the answer is more ambiguous than ever; basically, just "wait and see."

Sort of glad this is all being worked out in advance of Scarlet release so I don't have a CF module paperweight!

If you think SSDs are expensive now,... imagine how expensive they would be with a RED branding on them.

Well, 256GB SSD is around $700 now; 512GB is roughly double that, and the write speeds are plenty high, all with the robustness of CF cards. That seems pretty reasonable, and I doubt RED will have to do so much qualifying to get the write speeds they need (there's more of a cushion with SSD media); that should keep costs reasonable.

The RED SSD mag will be able to handle 1-2 hours of 3k no problem.

And I imagine once the Scarlet is out, Red and 3rd party vendors will add to the possibilities. Thanks for your responses, it's given me a sense of what I'm looking at.

I am hoping you meant $1200 and not $12,000!

Yup. The Fusion- io cards are designed to plug into a motherboard and cost about 900 dollars. I figure a few hundred extra for the interface and enclosure and it should offer great performance at a slight discount from CF cards, albeit with a higher entry point.

Can anyone from RED confirm that 64gb CF cards are being dropped?

Or does anyone have a link to the thread where this was mentioned.

The 64gb CF card has been a big part of my purchase list.

Thanks Terry....

I'm growing a bit weary of this "well, we have canceled/delayed this.... but it will be worth the wait, it's amazing".

Without trying to sound dramatic... I think i'm gonna have to stop visiting here and wait for the inevitable buzz around the web when products actually launch.

See you tomorrow ;-)

The thread I linked to was, shall we say, heated. The mods worked it over heavily at least once. :violent5:

I think you're not alone in feeling a little disoriented about the upcoming mediat options right now.

Yeah - I have to admit just a little confusion over the whole thing. No CF cards, no hard drives. Can't imagine SD cards would win out over CF. Only SSD seems to be on the table - or some mysterious unknown recording media. Hey - wait a minute - maybe RED is going to introduce an advanced recording media on a spool sort of mechanism - like, uh - TAPE! :reddevil:
