My brain has been stuck in a never ending story. Fixed or 2/3'rds. I'm a Libra and the two seem to completely and equally justify my purchase. I've weighed the pro's/con's of both while awake and asleep to the umteenth degree.
I love the idea of the fixed lens working with the camera but still the ability to play with other glass makes me head over to 2/3'rds land.

Is there any chance of a mini digi zoom for Scarlet 2/3'rds ?

That would sway me towards 2/3rds but till then I will be hangin over here in loopland : )

Much love, Kalani

Minor detail - the Fixed is a 2/3" sensor.

oh, I thought people were calling the fixed "fixed" and the non "2/3rds". I know they are both 2/3 : )

I would also bet ya that one of the above brains will be called something other than the Scarlet or Epic...something like "Maroon". Probably the FF35 Scarlet if anything. ;)

Let me make it easy for you. You can buy a fixed brain and a cinema brain with your system for much less than you could buy a programmable wireless remote control servo zoom for cinema to match it.

I love the idea of having a detachable zoom. And a zoom rocker on the handle. Which rotates. Handle, not zoom rocker.

I feel like external FF units might be headed out the door as electronic in-lens stuffs gets better an better.. I have a sneaking suspicion that pulling focus is going to be a joy with Scarlet fixed in camera..
I want my camera package to be as small as humanly possible.. I think the next step would be pressure sensitive touch like a Waccom.. Can you imagine pulling focus with a pressure sensitive stylus with 2000+ levels of sensitivity that determine how fast the lens barrel moves? What a dream. you could program the eraser side of the pen to execute specific functions. In the future ( or now with Red ) all sorts of written gestures could do different things.. I think that focusing work flow will definitely be headed in this direction in the near future : )

You could also "draw" little YouTube style annotations on the screen and just tap each one as your focus point changes..

Both

Yep Kalni both will be very usefull. I think that fixed will be great for action, docu, run and gun and ENG stuff where you will use its autofocus functions, qiuck zoom and small form factor. And fixed one for all other things which deserves better lenses - primes, and stuff with very wide or big tele glass.

"Fixed" brain is relatively cheaper and you can use all the toys and modules for both cameras.

My plan: Fixed and S35 Brain

That way you get all the goodies to make the S35 work and you throw on some Canon glass...bam! High frame rates in the Fixed. Shallow DoF in the S35.

Yeah, if you just buy one of each RED camera, you'll be right :P

I must say though, it would be really nice if RED just did one Scarlet 2/3", and simply provided the "kit" as a discounted accessory which included a lens, redmote, card reader, etc. The "pro" of buying this kit would be that you get a discount on the accessories included in the bundle. The "con" however would be that you wouldn't have the flexibility to choose what you want AND still get the "kit" discount. So essentially, the sole purpose of the "kit" would be to promote higher turn over of those items, and hence allow RED to manufacture them for less.

The main benefit of doing it this way is that those who do buy the kit, still have the option of changing lenses in the future. Your budget at the moment might be tight and your requirements may be little, but in a year or two, you may want to invest in one or more quality lenses. That's how I would have liked to see it done; of course I'm sure everyone would like to have it that way, but there must be some cost advantage that comes fixing the lens to the body, as otherwise I can't think of a reason why RED would create two 2/3" Scarlet's.
