I know this is a stupid question to most of you so please forgive it. I have not bought my RED camera yet so I need to know.
Is the 2/3" Sensor of a Scarlet the same size as the 2K format of a RED-One? If not, what's the difference?
Thanks.

I don't think so. The sensor on the 2/3 Scarlet is smaller than that of the Red One, and it records in 3K. So I'm not sure if you can compare the two.

I think we will find out the exact specifications of the 2/3" Scarlet sensor in an hour but it should be close in size to the RED One's 2k mode. The difference is the Scarlet will have more sensor sites packed into that 2/3".

Both the RED One's 2k mode and the 2/3" Scarlet work with S16mm lenses.

He means is the 2K crop mode of the RED One sensor approximately the same size as the full 3K recording mode of the Scarlet sensor.

Just the crudest math here. The RED1 sensor is 24.4mm wide, half of that would be 12.2mm while the RED 2/3" sensor is 10.1 wide. So like Justin said it should be pretty close in physical size.

Yes, Chuck Z, that is exactly what I mean "IF" 3K means 2/3" sensor.
*Is the 2K "crop mode" of the RED One sensor the same size as the 2/3" sensor of the Scarlet ?
If it is, I'm "assuming" the 2/3" sensor of the Scarlet can pack as much info as the 2K of the RED One. Is that true?

Scarlet 2/3" sensor is smaller in physical size than 2k crop on a RED 1, but it has about twice the resolution since it shoots 3k (3072 Pixels wide) instead of 2k (2048 pixels wide). Based on previously announced pixel sizes 2k on RED 1 , (.0054) is 11.05mm wide vs Scarlet 2/3" (.0032) at 9.8mm. Reference size for 2/3"HD is 9.6mm wide.

From red.com

The 2K crop is S16mm, just slightly bigger than 2/3".

If you're looking at Red 2K as a reference for DOF, then its a good reference point.
