Hi Guys,

I've just signed up on here so please do forgive me if this has already been discussed etc.

I've just about saved up (one way or another) for a 'Red Scarlet' and a few extras and patiently await its release.

Now, I'd like the 2/3 Interchangeable version & maybe the set of 5 mini primes. what suggestions would you have as extras to add to the body for a basic 'low budget' first time film maker shooting inside and out mainly in Europe.

Also I've been using Final Cut on a Macbook Pro 2.5Ghz, I'm starting to think my Macbook won't be able to handle 3k, does anyone know about this as I would like to be mobile (Scarlet & Macbook).

Any info or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Just download these RAW files (http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=42130) and try. Or you can convert them to ProRess... Just play with them and read the many WorkFlows and choose the one that fits you...
That's what I'm doing or the moment...

I would suggest a basic rail system, nice tripod, follow focus... For starting I would look at a number of places for Rails and FF, including Redrock Micro. Tripod has its own thread, I love my Manfrotto 503 head

it'd be nice to have a mac pro with an eightcore processor but realistically i think you can get by with a macbook if you absolutely need to. i'm running a 2.4 ghz macbook pro with 4gigs of ram and i have been messing with redcine x and exporting large files without a hitch, understandably the files available are only a few seconds long and obviously can't take days to export. it is really gonna come down to what you are shooting that is going to determine what you need for post. i shoot mostly action sports, often times i shoot for hours and only keep seconds of clips so a macbook is totally doable. if you are planning on shooting a feature film and edit your dailies in realtime on a macbook is not going to happen . . .

Thanks for the great advice guys.

So 2/3 Brain, battery and what else do you suggest ? can I get away with just two MiniPrimes to start with, if so which ones ?

I'll be shooting close up documentary style work and short films with some opening panaramic shots etc, sound is very important as well.

Macbook Pro - Think I'll use it on location with Final Cut as a kind of sketch pad and invest in a G5 8 Core for the Studio. Will the 8 core be able to handle full film/final Cut Editing in 3K, as a small film producer I won't have access to much more.

Thanks in advance guys, like the rest of you I'm really excited about the 'Scarlet' and looking forward to becoming part of the family.

The brain is supposed to have one CF interface built-in. Or at least it did a while ago, the side-CF module is an additional. ...This may not be the case now, hoping we'll get most of our answers in a couple weeks at NAB.

IMO, if you are trying to get away with only two primes, you're just unnecessarily restricting yourself. Especially if you will be doing documentary style shooting. I would say the fixed-lens model warrants serious consideration here. Especially since a complete up-and-shooting kit will cost less than the 2/3" interchangeable brain alone with two mini-primes.

But, if you do wish to go the interchangeable route and restrict yourself to two primes, that becomes a difficult decision and rather personal as to which ones you would want. There is actually a thread about that very thing in this forum here somewhere. If you find it, you will see that focal length opinions vary depending on personal taste, shooting style, artistic intention, etc.. For documentary style work, I would probably want the 16mm and the 50mm. That way I have a medium-wide along with basic telephoto. For narrative, I would want the 8 and the 25. But then again, I also have a fondness for wide-angle photography, so would be very tempted to get the 6 and the 16 instead. Another thing to consider with the mini-primes, is that there's been mention of a discount if you buy the full set. ...It's probably not much of a discount, considering the full set of mini-primes is under $5K.

...and to pick a couple nits. There's no such thing as a G5 8-core. No G5's being made anymore, haven't been since 2005. The 8-core Mac Pro systems will grind right through 3K Scarlet footage.
