  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 1080p Scaled?

From the Nov. 30th annoucment 2 years ago, they still had the possibility of a 1080p full 2/3rd sensor frame, so 1080p with no cropping.

There has definitely been talk in the past about 1080p R3D right out of the camera.

At this point, though, I don't even want to repeat what I have simply because I feel like the situation has probably changed. Hopefully someone from RED team can tell us what the future holds...

In the mean time - does anyone with an Epic know if it will do 1080p out yet?

I don't think there was ever talk about 1080P R3D, which would require RAW to RAW scaling, but I think there was talk about a 1080P RGB recording option. Since the Epic (and probably the Scarlet) have a 1080P monitor-out, it's not a far stretch to record it if the quality is decent enough.

RGB is not a codec, it is a color sampling, or a color space (since I'm french, I'm not very able to explain it in english).

We don't know yet of any kind of codec to record in 1080P, but Jim announced that there will be a proxy module dedicated to record in compressed video formats like the Alexa does with the ProRes recording. Anyway, Jim talked more of some sort of H264 codec than a ProRes. (but H264 is able to support very nice compression and stuff so can be a nice option)

If that proxy module can have R3D references in its metadatas, it can be very very VERY nice for small computers for all the editing process.

There are definitely applications in which having a 1080p scaled RGB mode would be wicked helpful. Especially in the Scarlet line as it will be used more with people who need quick turn arounds without the computer/rocket power to do so from RAW. This was one of the features that I was banking on to use for corporate work...

I asked Ted about this the other night in Sydney.

He said it was very much still happening, but couldn't go into specifics as they are still being developed.

I figured as much. Very much looking forward to it

I'm guessing we won't get a whole lot more insider information prior to NAB. After all, if you give away too much before hand, there won't be much to give at the show!

Then again, RED has a whole lot to give...lots of exciting things going on.

"All details will be presented before NAB."

Jim

Hopefully things will be flushed out by the end of the month? Maybe the store will come online as far as package prices and more details. Than at NAB people will be able to place orders for EPIC X and maybe even SCARLET? Things are falling into place :)

This is what I'm hoping for. Every day I shoot with my Canon 7D I get more and more frustrated with it as a filmmaking tool, I'm just itching for Scarlet to release so I can buy it. I really hope RED's time tables are accurate otherwise I might end up having to settle for something else...maybe that Panny AF100 or Sony's new baby brother to the F3.

I could see this being great for quick turnarounds, especially if footage is to be intercut with other non-raw cameras and/or you don't have a Red Rocket (which will be the case with me and probably a lot of other Scarlet-only users).

I believe there is a downside, though. Isn't any worthwhile RGB codec, such as ProRes 4444, going to create files MUCH larger than RED's compressed RAW? I'm much more familiar with stills, and I think the parallel would be comparing a RAW still file - DNG or NEF or whatever Canon is - with a TIFF. Tiffs can easily be 4x as large, with more baked-in info and less latitude. So if this is one option for recording on camera, instead of RAW, you'll need some extra $$D's. If this is only available as an output signal over SDI you'll need an external recorder and more media.

Even if you were just creating a proxy like ProResLT, the file size would be significant, and an extra recorder or RED module would be a must.

Anyway, whenever they announce how it's going to work and with what options, I'll see if it fits my needs and budget. There's no free lunch.
