  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So, I've been curious but haven't found anything on this question I have.

The scarlet and epic will do on the fly, full frame, in camera resolution down scaling as a an option. There are lot of reason that people may want to do this.

I'm wondering if the down res media will be "raw" or if it will be an RGB format.

Then I wonder if it is a down scaled RAW will the image have less dynamic range and more noise. My experience with film is that the same stock at in larger format yields more latitude in print because there is more grain. Do files work the same way?

I think the downress File was called Red RGB, which screams not Raw at me.

Don't know about the DR and Noise thou.

From a technical point of view, down-scaling a RAW stream into another RAW stream would not be an easy thing to do - if at all possible. RAW, as we know, is basically the data output from the imaging sensor, so it contains more information than just colour values for each pixel. Down-scaling usually involves some form of re-sampling (which involves creating new pixels from the average of multiple pixels), and I just can't imagine how re-sampling could work on RAW video data. If you were to downscale to exactly half the vertical and horizontal lengths (a ratio of 4:1) then re-sampling wouldn't be required, and so in theory, a RAW to RAW down-scale should be possible.

If you have say the s35 and can downconvert to 2k. Would I get smaller less visible grain? or do I have to do that in post? I mean downsampling. With the hvx 200 you have to record full rez and than in post downrez for best result since the grain seams to have the same size no matter of rez you record.

I mean in theory since the s35 dont exist yet..

Humm, yeah, What I'm dreaming is downsizing the raw image with out processing it's look or what ever, keeping it "raw" just smaller. Basically to save space in capture and processing power in post, when it's not necessary to blowup or high res projection.
