  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sask Fashion Week

Hey Colin

We've got a live event coming up soon, so this was very very inspiring.

thanks for sharing

Colin, That's maybe not such a crazy idea : ) next time........

I'm almost embarrassed to admit it on here, but we were going to hire 3x C300 for the live event.

My concern with using our reds on this Gig is battery life and fan Noise, we are shooting a speaker who will present to a large Audience for roughly an Hour. I'm not sure until we scout next week if it will be possible to get AC power to the reds. What do you do?

Also in terms of editing we don't always use the Raw files, but tend use files off the Pix240 and then use the Raws when we need to do something special.

how are you editing the Raws?

once again thanks for sharing the great work

best

Hi Adrian, Here are my two cent answers on your questions...

I'm almost embarrassed to admit it on here, but we were going to hire 3x C300 for the live event.

Why be embarrassed, best tool for the job is always in best interest of your client...

Fan Noise is something I've had to deal with, hopefully the new fan design is quieter. I don't have it, so I can't comment on how quiet it is or isn't. With regards to battery, I use a Red Brick that hangs on the back of the Epic. Gives me about 2.5hrs - 3hrs per battery, and I find an opportune moments to swap batteries. With the stuff I've shot, this method works out, and I haven't had issues. But every shoot is different. Worse comes to worse, AC.

Also in terms of editing we don't always use the Raw files, but tend use files off the Pix240 and then use the Raws when we need to do something special.

I run all the .R3D files out to 1080p ProRES using a Red Rocket machine. I don't have a Pix240, but the end result from what your doing and what I do get you to the same place. The only thing is I love the time in RedCine getting my colors and exposure just the way I like it before outputting. In this case, with Fashion week, the lighting didn't change too much, but I was able to get all sorts of looks right in Red Cine. I like the flexibility I get from running things through RedCine. BTW, it was also through RedCine that the full-rez TIFF frames were output from.

I can't wait till I can load single frame .r3d files into Lightroom, and have Lightroom treat them as a still, not as a piece of footage...

once again thanks for sharing the great work

thanks Adrian!

Colin

a HUGE thank you.

How much more time does your method add to the process? Eg how long does it take to create/output 2x hours of rushes? I'd love to use RCX a whole lot more. We don't have a rocket as I've been waiting forever to upgrade our Mac Pro. Hopefully the new one will be out soon.

I see (hear) you've stripped most of the audio out on this, what do you normally do about the Audio?

Sorry for my ignorance, (I'm not an editor) but I like to understand things. When you output the Prores through RCX does it hold onto the original timecode? We always Jam TC on multi-camera shoots.

Awesome work again, thanks so much for your openness.

Best

The real key to using RedCine is the Red Rocket card. I am still using the old one, and I get near real time outputs. For the most part the method I use is soon as I get back to the studio from a shoot I make my backups, then do a one light correction on each clip. Once I've finished, I save off a RedCine project file and run the 1080p outputs. This method has never held me up, as I have a system specifically to do outputs hooked up to a fast RAID. While I wait for those to output, I'm usually working on another project, and not watching progress bars seems to make the whole thing work much quicker ;-)

I see (hear) you've stripped most of the audio out on this, what do you normally do about the Audio?

In the case of this fashion shoot, I was shooting most everything except some interviews off speed, so audio is disabled anyway when shooting off speed on the Epic. When I do shoot interviews or need audio, I use a wireless audio pack which I velcro to the camera. The transmitter is either hooked up to a lapel mic, or a boom mic depending on the shoot. I prefer to record all my audio in camera, I get excellent audio with this method.

First don't apologize, no one knows it all including me, and I hope the info I can pass along will aid you in the future. There are only about a bazillion ways to deal with .r3d these days, the method I use produces sharp images, and makes easy to edit files. Nothing bugs me more than a time line that stutters :-)

Yes original TOD timecode carries through. In some cases where I change my mind on how I graded a shot, I change the grade, re-output that one shot, and relink the new file. In some even more rare cases, I will relink the entire project to the RAW in Davinci, then work from the RAW directly. But it isn't too often I do this. Usually my clients want 1080p finals, so I try to get the grade right the first time from RedCine.

Awesome work again, thanks so much for your openness.

Anytime!!
