  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

San Francisco Bay Area Red Users

Quick question, guys, as an owner/operator, do I need a business license to rent my equipment?

" in general" ..
you probably should have one - depends on your city & county ...

you may need FEDERAL ID # ( can get it online within minutes) ..note if somebody pays you $$ ( over $600 in a year) they'll need either your soical sercuity # or your Fed ID # unless you are set up as a corp, LLC, limited partnership ...

and you might need to set up account with the Cailfornia state board of equalization ?? ... basically if you didn't pay sales tax when you bought equipment then you have to charge sales tax to customers that rent it ...

i'm over across the bay in costra costa county .. i have no business license .. do have a FED ID and a account with CA state board of equalization ...

have a chat with a accountant for the fine details ...

Will I be able to charge rental fees for my equipments as part of my service as a camera operator, when working with a big budget production without a business license?

IMO - YES ( no business license)
usually in Cailf when crew works on a big show they are hired as a employee's ... many then rent/charge for their tools/equipment ... many (crew) prefer the rental be under a business name ( which could also be their real name) - you should speak with a accountant or business lawyer ..

now if i was only renting to productions that i work on i would NOT get a local business license but would get a fed ID for equipment rental( may or may not be tax advantages to you having rental under business vs. individual ) ....

IMO do NOT include the rental with your day rate - break it down into rental rate & labor rate ....

Thank you very much, Donatello, for the imformation and for having me at your show and tell for your Red camera a few months ago.

This is the post for the May LA meeting. Fallow the link

The May meeting is shaping up quite nicely, I want to thank Stefany Allaire the CEO of Pixellexis Systems & Technologies. They are going to bring their new red box to the meeting so we can see how fast this bad boy is.....

Also would like to hear what you folks would like to cover at the May Meeting.

Myself and Mike Burton have been doing 4k + Raw Consulting ( not just Red) for Bay Area production companies and each project has been a whole new can of worms. AppleProHQ has been the preferred codec since most Post houses don't have 4:4:4 monitoring or the 320MB/s thuroughput for DPX files.

Believe me the Cine folks have no problem with this new technology.Editors have been using the proxy files which are tried and true method but most commercial production and post production companies are unwilling to take the time and money on a commercial project to experiment with full end-to-end commercial production this is were we come in and design the best workflow for the project.

Good Day to All,

I managed to take few minutes since we are in the crazyness of the preparation of the NAB Show to answer this post. Well, thanks for inviting us it will be my pleasure to assist one of your meeting and I am very anxious to meet those Red user people... At this time, I was wondering, do I need to bring some cookies over !!!! ;o)

Talk to you soon all

Stefany

I can't say for sure if there are or are not any upcoming red-centered events, but indeed there should be. It seems most local rental houses have their reds (we just got ours about a month ago!), and I know taht some "consultant" friends of mine are slated to soon recieve theirs. In light of that, bay area red users should start to set something up regularly so that all users can come and meet fellow owners, share the red love, and talk about various problems and technical snafus and also showcase recent projects and whatnot, go out for test shoots, just an all around RED group i guess is the simplest way to put it. I don't want to speak for "the big man" a.k.a boss man but I know he's expressed an interest in meet ups with bay area users as well. That being said, would people be intersted in a meeting of sorts in early to mid april?

After two months of billing errors, I finally got my Red two weeks ago. I'm near Palo Alto. Please give me a heads up of any planned meetings. NOTE: I travel a lot and do not read RedUser on a daily basis, so be a bit patient if expecting a response.

I look forward to meeting you people.

Me too. Just got mine last week :) I live in Monterey and don't mind the drive up.

I'm in SF for the summer (at least 4 more weeks) and have my camera on me.

Any of you guys going to Cinegear? It would be nice to place faces with names. Tail Ends
