  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This one had some crazy production/turn around time-lines. A blazing fast, two-day shoot, with only ONE night of exterior work (which is like 80% of the ad!) and several time-consuming stunts/wire work setups and wardrobe flip-flops! They wanted a very Matrix-y style epic battle sequence, but of course, it's really an ad to sell "televisions" (Hence the cheesy shots of people looking at their TVs!)... Either way, it was fun to shoot. Thankfully, we structured the night shoot to be somewhat linear, because the sun was definitely coming up by the ending!

Enjoy.

wow looks so amazing - great job

How did you do that shot where he was pushed back in the street, and the pavement rippled behind him? It looks to me like you did this mainly with practicals and wire removal (looks really clean)?

We did have him on wires that were removed, the smoke was practical, but the pavement effect was CG enhanced...

how was the car smashed when he landed on it towards the the beginning?

With locked off cameras, we dropped a 400 pound weight on the car first, and then did another take where we dropped a stunt man pretty hard down onto the pre-crushed roof... the two takes were blended in post.

14million views in 2 days... I think you guys killed it.

Almost 16 million now, I actually didn't notice that... pretty crazy!

This is awesome! I saw it on Youtube recently for the first time and showed my wife, told her I thought it was an awesome commercial that looked like a summer block buster. The angles, the location, especially the color grading was just peeeeeerrrfect, made me want to go out and shoot! So inspirational man.

PS: (I would have loved to have done sound on this, really fattened it up).

Would love to know about the workflow with the Kowa anamorphics you used, i presume they were 40,50,75,100mm right? What are your thoughts about them for the look it gave, sharpness , wide open etc..

Thanks!

It was only like a week turn-around on the post... They kinda slopped it together in my opinion. The director did some mock up integrated text, kinda pseudo 3D and layered text effects as part of the cut aways of people seeing this even on their phones and tv... They went with something a lot more basic and boring. It would be great to do a 60-second cut down of this without the voice overs and text.

The Kowas were shot almost exclusively wide open...
