SAMSARA is the followup to Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson's landmark, legendary masterpiece non-narrative film BARAKA. SAMARA was filmed over 5 years in 25 countries entirely on 65mm five-perf film, then scanned at 8K and finished with a 4K DI. A couple months ago I saw this film projected at 4K, and it was simply STUNNING. :001_tt1: It was a cinema experience unlike anything I could have imagined or anticipated. The film packs a big emotional punch.

SAMSARA will hit US theaters this August. I highly, highly recommend seeking it out, and seeing it in nothing less than 4K.

This film should ONLY be viewed at 4K!!

Tom, wouldn't a 70mm print be just as good if not better or do you think the DI step negates any benefits to staying on film? I just saw this on apple.com and thought of you.

I found the other thread you started that stated the filmmakers are not planning on 70mm prints and that they fully approve the 4k DCP version. I will seek that out in LA when it arrives.

Oh my lovely deaf dancers in 4K now!

I'm probably going to have to wait for the Blu-ray, doesn't sound like a film that would screen in new zealand, and if it did it wouldn't be in 4k.

Isn't Peter Jackson investing in theaters down there? I'm pretty sure I read he was footing the bill for upgrading some known ones to state of the art for The Hobbit.

When I tried to google 4k cinemas in new zealand the only thing I found was that park road post was updated but could find nothing on auckland area cinemas, I suspect that only a few post houses have been upgraded

Is this showing anywhere on the West Coast in 4K? Anyone hear of plans of it showing in 70mm print?

The LA show at the landmark

Any idea what class of projection equipment they have? The Landmarks in Diego are art film houses with shitty equipment . . . not that there's anything wrong with that . . .

Samsara website has it listed as it will be shown in 4k

Was wondering if any of my REDbroz have ever been to the specific Landmark theater and have an impression of the equipment and facility. Like said - in Diego Landmark theaters show great films but have very dated equipment. A flick like this should be viewed and heard at the highest level.

Sidebar: anyone else noticed that the BluRay remasters of classic films look ok but sound like shit? It's like they put 95% of the resources into the visual image then combine that with a very AM radio quality soundtrack. Just watched 2001, Raising Arizona and Life of Brian - same audio issue in all.

I'll wait for blue ray as well... Sadly not enough or any 4k screens in AUS either.

Sadly my blue ray of BARAKA is crap... so disappointing. I hope they do a better blue ray conversion to with this movie.

joking right? im an avid bluray collector and baraka is one of the best bluray transfer.Fotokem did their best on that job!

Just saw "Samsara" in 4K at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in NYC -- it was amazing! And the 65mm photography was great. The last movie I saw was the IMAX print of "Dark Knight Rises" with some non-efx IMAX shots being contact-printed from the o-neg, so that's two large format film productions in a row that I've seen. What's great about large format film is that you get the clarity and fine-grain of digital but all the beauty of film, it's lovely to look at.
