  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Footage and reversing gear

Footage and reversing gear

Thanks Joel, it's taken in my village in Buckinghamshire, UK, it was a particularly frosty day.

I will post a picture of the reversing gear next week, but basically it is like a 19mm offset bracket that swings down from a short piece of 19mm rod that is secured in the RED top bracket (works on both top sides of the camera) it has a small piece of 19mm cylinder alloy at the other end which is tapped to accept a screw in gear wheel that is the same size as the FF-5's.

It's not the most sophisticated solution but it does work and means I don't have to mess with my new FF-5.

I've also had an 80mm doughnut made that clamps to a top 19mm rod and allows me to attach my Arri LMB-5 which was too heavy for clip on with the ZF's and use it on bars.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I can.

Regards

Nick Bennett

Very nice but but made me to think about dying unpleasant!

Hi Nick,
great shots,it really is a beautiful part of the country your in.
Grade looks spot on to me,you certainly nailed the quality of light we've been getting recently.
Interested in your thoughts on the FF5,it obviously works well for the ZF's,have you used it with cine lenses?. Some say it has problems, but would welcome your thoughts, based on real world experience.
Tom.

Thanks, I was looking at both the FF-4 and FF-5 for some time, I've mainly used the FF-4 in the past for cine glass but as much of my work is still with cine style 2/3" lenses where the FF-5 is aimed, I also bought the 64 tooth gear as I've been told this will approximate the speed I am used to on the FF-4 when using larger barrel cine glass.

I know that people have reported issues with the arm length etc but I've not experienced this yet as I've only been using it with the ZF's but I would think it would be OK with speeds and most UP's, MP's and the Cookes may be a problem though.

If I had the money to buy both I would but I have to cover myself for a range of work on both RED and ENG cameras so overall I'm very happy with the FF-5.

Thomas, how are you going with the Leica conversions?

Nick

Nick, it looks great, but I wonder why everything looks so sharp. Way too much, in my taste. Did you apply additional sharpening? Or is this just as it comes off the R1?

Just curious...

Does anyone know if the front-elements are available for purchase separately?

Hi Nick,

I love the Leica conversions,I've used Leica lenses both R & M for just over 25 years,so I know the look well. It's like having old friends with a new set of clothes. I was fortunate that the set came available when I had some money, but my original intention was to go down the ZF route,I think it's an excellent choice, proven by some great shots being posted on the forum, they are extremely sharp lenses.
The Duclos modification seems to be one of the best.
Thanks for the info about the FF5,I'll probably go with the FF4,being more suited to my lenses, but it would be great to see some shots of your rig,if you get the chance.
Tom.
