So rendered some footage out of REDCine-X Pro Build 10 the other day that was desaturated and noticed what I would consider some really bad banding in the image. Normally, I used ProRes 422 as I found it's pretty good for my normal use. But after seeing the banding I tried rendering out some ProRes 4444 of the same clip. Same problem. So I took both clips and put them into FCP7 on a ProRes 4444 timeline. When I scrub back and forth between the 422 and 4444 clip I notice no difference in the clips-they both have the exact same banding. In RCX-P there is no banding, only in the ProRes. Have I just found a limit to the ProRes codec, or is there something wrong in the processing?

My RCX settings are full debayer going to 1080p with mitchell scaling.

Don't have an answer and experienced the same banding that wasn't on r3d (prores 422)

Common trap for people that don't know there editing tools properly.

You will only see banding in un-rendered playback or in Med or low res playback. I'm doing it right now in front of me... 4444 PRO RES.. with banding... Rendered.. now nothing. gone.. !

Render your time line... it all goes away...

Thanks Mark.
True, I didn't rendered my timeline before exporting. But when I export a sequence render applies automatically, otherwise I couldn't have my Prores mov when quitting FCP.
After compressing in mpegstreamclip (h264 2 pass, 10000kbps) I still see banding on the sky @ 1'57'' here: https://vimeo.com/39412688
I'll render timeline next time
Cheers

It's also most likely your monitor. It's probably 8 bit which will show banding in gradients due to the fact it cant display them properly and the compression of the video itself.
