Okay, looking for a new S35 Arri standard PL mount DFV, and see few new choices, lets see if any of you has used any of them and what your opinions, based on personal experience or the experience of professionals you work with are.

Take note that to me this tool, is one of those few tools of the trade I respect and value, and I give it great deal of importance on set, for this I don't mind spending a good deal o f money on a good one.

Kish Optics used to make two types of PL mount DVF's but can't see any new info on them, Cavision, simply put, I never used them, but fill that they are not of good quality, so for now I',m looking at this two.

Choices:

Denz 35mm Director's Viewfinder Kit

The ARRi Media Finder is pretty nice, although you can't put the Optimo DP's on them.

Hey Ketch doesn't PS technik make one.

Hey Yaque,

PS technik only makes the small ones, and carries the ones made by Kish Optics in PL mount, but they are of very old design.

Want state of the art of what is available today.

Was looking in to that Bob, but didn't find any relevant info to make me want one.

Actually I think remembering that Micth over at Able did had few of the Arri DVF's with Modify ground glass for the Red 4k, will have to see if they can do 5k now, he he.

Ketch check out this, simon makes great gear. Mention my name.

Thanks Robert
it is the same one I listed above from filmcamerakit, the DVF-S35, but will call upon them as well and see if they have a black one, as filmcamrakit only have it in silver, and need large orders for Black.

Thank again Robert.

Agreed, they are ridiculously expensive, but unfortunately a necessity to my style of working and I like to have the best I can buy to make sure my work does not suffer form luck of quality equipment, so if something sis not done right is just my error, and I can not blame it on not having the right and best tools the business has to offer.

The EVF for me is a precise instrument, that carried with me on location and or used during the filming on set, allows for fast and extremely accurate point of view of a particular focal per a particular shot, fast and precisely, no need to mount or dismount the glass to the camera, unless off course I keep a Scarlet with me at all times to use as an DFV, but the Scarlets on set will be used for filming the Behind the scenes, and will al be the Fixed lens ones.

Definitely I don't like that old style DVF, but I do not mind the PL/Pana one, like the one Kish used to build, however so far my favorite remains the DENZ DVF KIT, at about 7k, is super expensive and by far the most expensive one, but it seems to offer the best of all in both functionality, hand grip stability, Grip Movement and slider to allow for balancing heavier lenses.

I've played with the Denz at Cinegear and it's sweet, but honestly even though I have an Arri PL mount finder I use my Allan Gordon MIV much more simply because of it's speed and light weight. The Arri finder comes out only on occasion when I need to impress the producer :coolgleamA:

I like the Arri model that Bob mentioned earlier in this thread. Arri makes a groudglass that's marked for RED 4K, but it accepts standard Arri 435 groundglasses and you can have custom ones made. I'm sure there will eventually be ones for EPIC and anything else down the pike. Its very compact, lightweight and has a clean, bright finder.

And yes, we sell them. ;-)

Hey Mitch,

yes I do remember at your booth at Vegas, that one of the guys was playing around with one of the ARRI DVF and an MP, beautiful piece.

James at Abel LA quoted me on the DENZ S35, which I really like, for its design, and especially to the fact that has an accessory plate, so that can better balance larger and heavier lenses, the fact that has that beautiful Wooden Handle ala Aaton is just a Bonus he he.

But off course with Epic is important to be able to have that 4k Ground glass, could this not be implemented on the DENZ DVF?

This will be sued for the RED PRO PRIMES, MASTER PRIMES, and off course the LEICA CINE PRIMES :w00t: SO I think that with the Standard PL mount will be fine right?

Ketch,

I have the Kish with PL, PV and Nikon mounts. It has been good to me. Almost did the video conversion years ago.

I don't use it anymore since we just rent one from Panavision so I may sell it one day.

Peter

The Kish is a different design from the ARRI or Denz. The Kish uses a straight optcal barrel while the others use a periscope configuration to shorten the physical length of the unit. You have to decide what you're comfortable using.

Ketch have you considered a gutted DSLR with inline frame line generator to give you all the framing options your little heart desires?
Probably cheaper than the Denz and a lot more flexible

Yes I have Jacek, but even so I have been thinking on getting your totally cool PL mount for the 1D IV, purely for special little project and some behind the scene, till I get the Scarlets.

Using it as a DVF has never crossed my mind, there is just something very special about having the Exact same Cine Lens on your DVF which actually is going to give the same perspective and Focal effect in you scene composition vs. having the lens mounted on the a DSLR, apart from the inconvenience of it, to me a DVF is the Pro tool to have in any serious Motion Picture Production.
