Today is the release of "S. Darko, A Donnie Darko Tale" on BluRay and DVD.
Not sure if this is the first wide release of a Red feature on BluRay, but for those of you that want to check out how a Red looks on BluRay, this is available as of today.

S. Darko was shot on Red (plus a few XDCAM shots - can you pick them out???) and was a 2K DI on a Pablo 4K.

Yikes, reviews are not looking good online.

Shot on two REDs, build 15. My RED #63 was the main camera A for most of the shoot. I was also the co-DIT/data wrangler on this movie.

When we were filming it sounded like there were already a bunch of RED shot movies from various folks "in the can", so I'm genuinely surprised and a bit flattered to hear that this is possibly the first (somewhat major) RED shot movie to be released on DVD / Blu-ray. How cool is that!

By my memory there were a few shots, probably less than 5, shot on the DP's personally owned EX1. It'll be interesting to hear if anybody and spot them. (Hint: Look for chromatic aberrations and compression artifacts!)

How well was the movie exposed?

We were still learning, especially early on. I was a bit curious about a couple of early shots, specifically the indoor police station shots. I was recommending it be shot a bit brighter, but the DP wanted to make sure it was gloomy enough in the final edit. However after reviewing the dailies we decided not to shoot quite that underexposed on any later shots. How much detail were you able to get? Any other shots that were particularly challenging for your Pablo?

The movie looks wonderful. It's exposed beautifully! You, Marvin, Chris and the whole team did an amazing job and it really looks wonderful. Also, the soundtrack to this film is fantastic - really a great score. And if you like SciFi, it's a really fun film.
It was color timed by Milton Adamou, who did a fantastic job with it - very natural and not too over the top - your exposure was just spot-on!

I've seen it. The cinematography is wonderful, and it's decent for most of the movie, but the ending is an epic cop-out. Don't expect much in the plot department, but enjoy the cinematography, because it really is excellent.

export to germany

export to germany

ok ... amazon uk is my friend ... US Import to UK ... export to germany ... :yikes:

a little silly, i know ... but first RED bluray ...
i've seen ARRI D21 & Panavision Genesis on bluray and i have to say, it wasn't that good ... but in the end it's a matter of taste, isn't it ?

How was the 1080p made from the 2K? Resampling or cropping a little?

"My Bloody Valentine 3D" is already out on Blu-ray as well.

As far as "S.Darko" goes, cinematically beautiful; story, not so hot sadly. But I didn't expect much after hearing it would go straight to DVD....

Cheers,

Paul

I was tryin' to avoid this movie like the plague. After reading it was shot on RED I'm headed out to buy a Blu Ray copy.

I'll just turn the audio down.

That's funny, Marvin was pushing to use his EX-1 as an occasional insert camera on the next feature he shot right after S. Darko, Cherry, produced here in Michigan. I'm really curious to see how it cuts with the RED, can't wait to see the Blu-Ray of both!

Hi Jeremy,
Don't forget our Red #360 that shot the underwater segments. We just watched it last night on DVD and it looks great! Wish it could have been released to the big screen.
Since the shoot we have added a video feed and a focus assist to the housing making shooting easier. It was great working with you.

GREAT looking movie guys! But, I have to admit I couldn't find the EX1 shot. Not sure what that says about EX1 vs. RED, or the DP/Colorist at Plastercity!

It simply says the EX1 is a very powerful camera in the right hands... especially given its price tag.

The EX1 was used to shoot the time-lapse sections of the film that broke up different sections/acts of the film. I believe almost all of them were intervalometer shots of Utah clouds moving through the sky. Marvin told me he "didn't want to use a Red to shoot those shots, since we set the camera looking upward for an hour or longer." So the EX1 does cut well in this film and especially on BluRay (1080, 8bit, 35Mb/s) as the EX1 was integrated in an appropriate and cleaver way.

** minor spoiler below **

Marvin's EX1 was also used as the crash cam. There was NO WAY my camera was going to go in that car with another car barreling toward it at 60+ mph. The EX1 seemed to survive just fine though.

Marvin was pretty excited about using his EX1 more on S.Darko as well, but in the end it didn't really happen.

We tried doing one timelapse on the RED, but it didn't work out, mostly because there weren't any clouds at the time and it looked to boring, after that the RED's were just too in demand to set aside for a time lapse.
