  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Russian anamorphics?

Also, a question for Fred or others who have tested the Red with anamorphics - since we aren't using the full width of the sensor for anamorphic on the Red, is there a "crop factor"? In other words is shooting with a 50mm anamorphic giving you the field of view closer to a 75mm anamorphic lens on 35mm film?

Walter

Hi Walter,

I think we've been in correspondence on Ebay about the Elite 100-300mm zoom?

Anyway, yes there's a crop factor. If you use the ana mode you'll see it. You're basically shooting in the square inside (which of course gets squeezed times two afterwards). A 35mm is the equivalent of a 25mm for example, instead of a 18mm.

Personally I like the what we started to call megascope - it's the extremely wide shoot you get of the 16:9 sensor squeezed. It would be great fun if that suddenly became a new format :w00t:

The Round fronts are cool - there is nothing that comes close for the money. If you are looking to rent I can put you in touch with some guys who have a great set in Mexico City that I helped put together and tune.

Here's a bizarre thought... probably no one wants their movies in a square frame, but if you shot a 2:1 anamorphic lens with your 16:9 camera mounted sideways, after unsqueezing and rotating you'd have a 9:8 aspect frame that uses all the pixels (and with anamorphic highlight distortion, etc.)

The post house got the off line today (remember these are guys I've worked with before and they're really good). They asked which shoots we've used RED on since it was really hard to tell. We smiled and said ALL :) .

Thought it was nice for red to hear something positive for ones and then I could maybe ask for my ARRI 19mm baseplate and second top mount that I've waited for a month and a 1/2 now :innocent: (starting to be annoying to rent them  ).

Excuse my ignorance, but, will these Russian Anamorphics be squeezed in the RED LCD/EVF while shooting? How does the 1.2:1 Anamorphic mode work on the RED? Also, would love to see some pics of this as well.
Thanks in advance.

IMHO, the anamorphic look screams 70's & 80's blockbuster to me. Although I would never watch them any other way, I don't like the way they look on my 16:9 HD monitor. I find that for all their impact when you're in the theatre, the impact is inversely proportional on DVD (I think the impact of the aspect ratio is diminished considerably when letterboxed on DVD). I think 1:85 is a better overall aspect ratio to have when you look at the lifespan of a film and consider the many ways we watch films today (multiplex, ipod, dvd, HBO, airplane seat). Some projects still need it in the multiplex, however.

I don't think you can actually use an anamorphic lens on a digital camera in the same way you would with film because of pixel interpolation when it's unsqueezed in post. Anybody have any thinking on this?

(Please note: In the same way as film) I know you can crop top and bottom with digital and get a facsimile of anamorphic, but that jacks with your lens angles and anamorphic artifacts that you may wish to keep.

I have used C and E series anamorphics on the Arri D20 and the Genesis with no problems whatsoever - In fact it helped "de-digitalize" (if that is indeed a word) the pics a lot - giving IMVHO a more organic look.

QUESTION FOR THE GROWN UPS: I have just bought a set of round fronted Lomo anamorphics in good condition and was wondering if Red planned on releasing a cropped sensor setting (ie - to give the opportunity for 4k 35mm sized sensor in academy (so that not too much data is needlessly recorded and thrown away) is this possible and/or likely?

Thx.
